Tricks for surviving Halloween treats!

Among the goblins and ghouls at Halloween awaits another scary sight - a mountain of sweets. Some of us will be dishing out the treats between Halloween and bonfire night, and some of us will have children who come home with a huge bag of sugar – either way, having so much chocolate around can trigger a weeklong sugar fest for you and the whole family.

So, what’s the best way to cope with this deluge of sweets. Maybe think about banning sweets from the house for the duration? Try this and not only will there be some very disappointed trick-or-treaters on your doorstep, the sweets you’re depriving yourself will become all the more enticing. Luckily, there are some tricks you can use to avoid a total sugar-induced meltdown:
  • Buy treats for Halloween only. The holiday is at the end of October, not any sooner. It’s funny how you have to replenish the treat bowl so many times when you stock up early.

  • Buy sweets you don’t like. I knew a woman who gave out hard butterscotch to children, now I know what she was up to.
  • Consider the sweet-free route. While Halloween isn’t the time to push nutrition, providing a diversion is not such a bad idea. Snack-sized bags of popcorn, pretzels, cheese crackers, animal cookies or raisins are good alternatives. Little toys, pencils and stickers will also be a hit with everyone.
  • Donate the leftovers. I put my bowl out on the porch towards the end of the evening and somehow the contents evaporate. If you do end up with extra sweets, take them to work, hide them away or even store chocolate in the freezer.
  • Fill your little trick-or-treaters up with some real food. If your kids go out trick or treating hungry, then they are likely to wolf down all the chocolate they’re given. But feed them roast pumpkin, bangers and mash, or cheesy baked potatoes before they go out, they are less likely to eat all the sweets in one go.

  • Avoid sweet dispenser syndrome. This is the very serious issue that befalls the person giving out the treats - "one for you and two for me" you know that little game. So do what you do for the kids. Eat a good meal, sip on some low-calorie hot chocolate or tea, and watch a scary movie between doorbell rings.
  • Ration or bargain the sweet bag. Okay, so the little goblins come back to base with the lion’s share. There might be enough sweets to fuel a sugar-fest for a week so you can ration out the sweets and allow a piece or two every one to two days. They may even forget they had so much. Or perhaps you can buy back the sweets with money or some desired prize.

  • Get it over and done with. After Halloween, the shops might continue to push their overstocked sweets on special offer or pride of place in the store. But you don’t have to buy it. Once Halloween is over, get the sweets out of the house and fill your bowls with apples, pears, nuts and mandarins instead.
