12 days of a GP's Christmas

December is here and 2016 is drawing to a close. Many will be glad to see the back of it and, at the same time, will be hoping the New Year brings hope and change.

A few years ago I wrote my blog on the theme of the carol 'The 12 days of Christmas'. This year, as the pressures on health services grow and grow, the carol's cumulative nature seems perfectly suited to express how overwhelmed many of us feel, so here is my updated version.

On the first day of Christmas the CQC gave to me… a bigger bill for their visit to me.

On the second day of Christmas the GMC said to me… "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

On the third day of Christmas the government said to me… "We need 7-day provision", the GMC said: "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

On the fourth day of Christmas the government said to me… "You will make this STP work, "We need 7-day provision", the GMC said: "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

On the fifth day of Christmas the government said to me…"Have a Five Year Forward View", "You will make this STP work, "We need 7-day provision", the GMC said: "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

On the sixth day of Christmas the government gave to me… striking junior doctors, said:"Have a Five Year Forward View", "You will make this STP work, "We need 7-day provision", the GMC said: "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

On the seventh day of Christmas the government gave to me… eye-watering indemnity premiums, striking junior doctors, said: "Have a Five Year Forward View", "You will make this STP work, "We need 7-day provision", the GMC said: "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

On the eighth day of Christmas the government said to me… no applicants for your partnership, eye-watering indemnity premiums, striking junior doctors, said: "Have a Five Year Forward View", "You will make this STP work, "We need 7-day provision", the GMC said: "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

On the ninth day of Christmas the government said to me… QOFs going to be disbanded, no applicants for your partnership, eye-watering indemnity premiums, striking junior doctors, said: "Have a Five Year Forward View", "You will make this STP work, "We need 7-day provision", the GMC said: "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

On the tenth day of Christmas the government gave to me… a promise for £10 million (!!), said QOF will be disbanded, no applicants for your partnership, eye-watering indemnity premiums, striking junior doctors, said:"Have a Five Year Forward View", "You will make this STP work, "We need 7-day provision", the GMC said: "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

On the eleventh day of Christmas the government gave to me… virtually all acute trusts in deficit, a promise for £10 million (!!), said QOF will be disbanded, no applicants for your partnership, eye-watering indemnity premiums, striking junior doctors, said: "Have a Five Year Forward View", "You will make this STP work, "We need 7-day provision", the GMC said: "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

On the twelfth day of Christmas the government gave to me… an unsustainable workload, acute trusts in deficit, a promise for £10 million (!!), said QOF will be disbanded, no applicants for your partnership, eye-watering indemnity premiums, striking junior doctors, said: "Have a Five Year Forward View", "You will make this STP work, "We need 7-day provision", the GMC said: "Great - fewer complaints," and here's a big bill from the CQC.

Our very best wishes for a relaxing holiday and may all your wishes for 2017 come true.
