Take part in a research study exploring new treatment options for acid reflux

If you regularly experience heartburn, acid regurgitation, or discomfort after meals, you may be able to take part in a new clinical study delivered by The Functional Gut Clinic.

This research compares two different ways of treating reflux symptoms in people who are at an early stage of their condition and have not yet begun medication. The study has been reviewed by an independent research ethics committee and is being carried out to full Good Clinical Practice standards.

For many people living with reflux, symptoms can vary from mild irritation to a significant impact on daily life. This study aims to understand which early interventions may offer the greatest benefit and how symptoms change over time.

What will I need to do during the reflux study?

Taking part requires a combination of clinic visits and remote check-ins. These are designed to understand how your symptoms change, how you respond to the treatment approach assigned, and whether any patterns emerge over time. The research team will guide you through every step and help schedule activities at times convenient to you.

Participation includes:

  • Three clinic visits.

  • Three remote consultations.

  • Completing a five-week symptom diary.

  • Taking part in structured assessments and questionnaires.

What tests and assessments are included?

The reflux study uses routine and non-invasive clinical assessments to understand your symptoms in more detail. These may help the research team measure how your reflux behaves, what triggers symptoms, and how your body responds to the intervention being studied. All procedures are explained clearly, and you will have the opportunity to ask questions at any stage.

Assessments may include:

  • Symptom scoring questionnaires.

  • Routine physical assessments.

  • Non-invasive sample collections.

  • Investigations commonly used in reflux assessment.
