10 weeks since I had my right hip operated on. Right hip will be done in Sept. Knees sore and weak.

After several years of increasing stiffness in both hips and lots of groin pain, I decided in Summer of 2017 to have x-rays taken. These showed that there was severe cartilage loss at left hip and a lesser amount of loss on the right. Doctor diagnosis was 'wear and tear'. I wasn't quite sure what this meant. I thought it was just my doctor's way of telling me that I was getting on (I'm 61). He recommended physiotherapy exercises which really did seem to make a difference for a couple of months but by January/February 2019 I could hardly walk 15 minutes on some days and experienced extreme stiffness after sitting for even 10 minutes. I was also having difficulty bending down and doing simple things like putting on my socks. While living abroad, I visited an Orthopedic doctor who told me in no uncertain terms that I had severe Osteoarthritis and would need to have both hips replaced. I was shocked and felt that I needed to get another opinion. Same result! Right hip was operated on on 20th March 2019. All went well. Progress has been fine. My problem now is that my left hip gets very sore but not just that, my knees can hurt and feel loose and wobbly especially going down stairs. 10 weeks on, I feel that my new hip has maybe not had as much walking as it should have and I'm just hoping that this will remedy itself and I'll be able to 'catch up' after the other hip gets down at the end of September! Why the sore knees?

It is possible to get referred pain in your knee/s from the hip

Hi Maggie
Thanks for you reply.
I suppose I was not expecting my operated leg to have any further problem once the hip operation was over. The left hip and knee are feeling very fragile at the moment and I'm wondering how to get through the next four months until the next op, even doing the minimum. It is hard to strengthen the new hip with so much pain still in the other leg.

I had a similar problem. my knee started to hurt more than my hip. After having both hips done (rhr 4/16/19) the hip pain went away. Dr said it was Reffered pain. Good luck.

Thanks for your reply. That's good to know. I can't wait. What about the knee pain? Did the knee area strengthen up?
All the best

Hi viny72201, my knee on my operated side was quite wobbly for a good two months, it does settle, as others commented, it's deferred pain. The feeling when walking downstairs was exactly the same. keep up the exercises particularly concentrating on 'the chair' or not too low squats, you will soon be fine.

Hi Helen
Can you please tell me what you mean by 'the chair'?

sorry, should have explained. better, once you feel you can, there is a skiing exercise where you lean with your back against a wall and lower yourself to a seating position, my consultant advised some light skiing exercises, google some ( although I have never set a foot in skis in my life!!) they are muscle strengthening and should help tighten up your knees as you dont exercise them so much whilst gentle walking and using crutches hence the wobbles. hope this helps

Thanks! I will give look them out and have a go.
This morning I needed to make a journey. It entailed walking down the six flights of stairs in my building (I live on 6th floor without a lift!) and an hour's bus journey plus a fifteen minute walk to my destination. I took it slowly but could feel the pain starting in my left, unoperated hip, as soon as I started walking. The journey back was just bearable but the ascent to my flat was excruciating. I don't usually take painkillers but today I had no choice!
