11 weeks post Op now the other hip is a major problem.

Had my left hip operated on in July and from day 1 the groin pain and bone pain has completely gone, my right hip is fully bone on bone and over the last week I'm finding it impossible to weight bare so I'm back to using both crutches I've been told this one will be done in January. I'm sure other people are going through this I just wanted to know if it is causing anybody major problems with their newly operated leg and how your coping.

Sorry to hear that your other hip now needs to be replaced but at least you will be set up for at least twenty years and possibly longer........got to look at the positive side at such times<G>
You must make sure that you continue to use both crutches until after the second hip is done and until you have regained muscle strength on the second hip. It is very important to maintain a good gait so that you do not get used to walking badly and to safeguard your back.
Try to do whatever exercises you are able to do over the next three months even if it is only arm and shoulder exercises. Fitness and good health does aid a good recovery.
Just a thought. I was able to stave off my original hip replacement for a couple of years or so my working to strengthen the muscles around the hip so perhaps this is worth your while trying if only to reduce the discomfort.

Hi RichardKen, I was totally housebound leading up to my 1st Op, the right hip is actually in worse condition than my left but the decision to operate on the left 1st was made as the pain in that one was greater, I'll take your advice 're using both crutches as I don't want to damage my new hip. Thank you for responding.

Hi Ann, isn't it a bit##, your rarring to go on your new hip and your other one decides its jealous, you can't blame it, its realised that it doesn't have to have pain so wants new bits it want be long and before you know it you will be completely pain free, I hope you don't mind me asking but how does bone on bone feel and when you do try to weight bear what is the outcome, does your hip spasm at all

That's good that you are able to see a light at the end of the tunnel, I have no arthritis but did fracture hip and pelvis but like you struggle to weight bear and when I try it kicks up and hurts, they have said it could be soft tissue but I can't see that so just keep exercising to keep ROM I hope your Christmas isn't ruined by it

I had left hip done nearly 1 year ago and when i went for check up after 6 weeks i was told my right need to be done as well and should be done in March and i still waiting for op day. I have right hip bone on bone and you can feel it and hear it . Specialy when you try do some excersices it crunch and some time my hip llock in and that hurt lots. Also i have spasm wich wake me up few times at night. When they did left one the make leg little bit longer about 1 and 1/2cm i have to put insole in my shoes to have a balance and not to limp to much. Im working in health system in nursing home . Now here in Australia specialy in South Australia health system are not really good and you have a longer waiting time . Hopefully i will have my rigt hip done soon because my right hip getting worse and painful.

Oh Ann, I feel your pain! I had TLHR in March and did great! However my other hip is now done! Scheduled for TRHR in Dec. I did PT before my first surgery because I could hardly walk and I didn't want to on my butt for the 7 weeks till then. PT really did wonders! It didn't take away my pain but definitely got me back on my feet. When I went back to PT after replacement, recovery was a breeze! PT people said it was because I had that hip as strong and flexible as possible before surgery. So I am doing all the exercises for my "bad hip" now so I hopefully will have an easy recovery again.

Thanks Tony, I'm still under PT so hopefully they will be able to suggest some gentle excersises that may help. At least I have one done so not as bad as I was any improvement is great. Good luck with your Op in Dec.

Both before my first hip replacement, and then again as I was getting well from No 1, THR, I tore up what was left of labram in left hip, unable to walk again, and had 9 month wait for surgery.
I got in the pool supported by a noodle under my arms and tread water, moving the hip joint but non-weight bearing apparently is the trick, the resistance of the weight of the water gives your muscles all the work out you need.
Did about an hour 3 times a week.

You sound a bit like me.
I didn't understand the extent of the pain I was in prior to having my first hip replaced. (My background, born with sever dysplasia in both hips, not diagnosed until 28-29 after years of competitive sports, etc. No one ever believed me when I told them something was right, so I kept pushing forward living my life).
It wasn't until about 4 weeks after my first hip replacement (right hip) that I felt the extent of my other hip (the left hip, the better of the two). The pain was excruciating and I could not believe that I had been living like that. I already knew that the other one was being replaced as well but getting through those 7 months between surgeries was extremely hard. I spent a lot of time on the couch (which still doing my physio for the new hip) and tried to stay off the crappy one as much as possible. I continued my pain medication and pain management and waited patiently for the next surgery date. Since I finally learned what it was like to be pain free it put the pain that I was in on another scale! It blew my mind haha So while I didn't think that my left hip as as bad (before any replacements) it may have actually been worse, I just got use to the pain and the body learns to cope with things. So your major problem just may be more visible now that you know what it's like to have one that isn't a problem.

PS Having both my hips replaced has changed my life and I couldn't be happier with my decision, even though it's not an easy process and is truly an intense journey.

Thank you for your really detailed helpful response. Like you I was 4/6 weeks post Op before my right hip decided I'd had it far to easy and now the slightest movement is a nightmare, but it's still better than having 2 hips in that state. I've bought myself a pair of blinged up crystal crutches so at least I look ok when I drag myself outside😀which cheers me up. It's great to know your now doing well and your life is now on track your far to young to struggle. Good luck in the future x

Oh dear ... I remember this - I was in total shock when I was told that the other (Left) hip needed hip replacement surgery - It was at my 6 weeks follow up appointment , showed major decline of cartilage where there was only mild 3 months before ...
It did cause problems for me --- my poor new hip had no chance to heal properly since it had to be the supportive one while still damaged ---
The time in between the surgeries was sort of hellish --- I wanted to keep up PT but couldn't because of pain - 2nd THR couldn't come soon enough - Time sounds about right - my 2nd one was done 6 months after 1st one -- you will have 2 new hips darling !!!
do your best for now - take your pain medication, it will take the edge off even though you might feel it is not helping)- do the exercises for new hip, gently and slowly ... if you had posterior approach, remember that it is and will be fragile for a while ... Walk but try to not overdo it - keep using crutches - I had a 4 wheeled walker (rollator) it easier to get around with - less pressure on upper body too ..
