15mg to 30mg

I am currently suffering with chronic depression and anxiety. I have been suffering badly for 6 months. Which has deteriorated into chronic depression where i am currently being overseen by a psychiatrist in my local crisis team. I have been taking Mirtazapine 15mg for 4 weeks. I then upped the dose to 22.5mg for 3 days and now i have been on 30mg for 5 days. I am still extremely severly depressed.

I am looking for people to give me their stories on if I need to wait to have been at 30mg for 2 weeks before noticing an improvement.

I also have headaches and sinus problems since starting the Mirt but i am willing to deal with those if it means getting better. As i have 3 amazing children and a loving wife, who are desperately needing their Dad/Husband to get better.

Many thanks.

I didn't want to read and run as I recognise the feelings you articulate in your post, and it really is so awful when you are in that place.

I had a similar experience some time ago when I started on a new medicine and it made me feel worse than when I began taking it...until it started to make me feel better!

From my own experience with sedating A/Ds , I know the sleep effect of mirtazapine can work really quickly but the effect on anxiety and intrusive thoughts can take longer. If you've only 'stepped up' your dose in the last few days, it's likely to take a little bit longer for it to kick in. But that's just my experience and I'm not a doctor and haven't been on higher doses of mirtazapine. The best thing I can advise you to do is to go back to your GP again - that is what they are there for - and get some guidance and, more importantly, reassurance.

You won't always feel the way you are feeling at the moment. Thing can get better and you can get well again - even though it probably doesn't feel like it at the moment.

Take one day (or part of the day) at a time, speak again with you GP and know that you've got this! I wish you all the best.

Thank you so much for taking the time to make your post. To have somebody who doesn't even know me take the time to try and help in some way is truly a wonderful thing.

Nobody deserves to go through depression as it is truly the most awful thing i could possibly imagine.

I am going to try and persist a little longer on my current medication. The Psychiatrist says we need to wait 2 weeks on the upper dose before making any decisions. It is my 6th medication and i truly feel more depressed than before i started taking it currently. Keeping my fingers crossed.

I am fighting tooth and nail every day, if it wasn't for my incredible family and my drive to be there for them again I don't think i would still be here.

Bless you for your lovely reply. It really is the most debilitating thing to suffer from but there is always light to be found. Somewhere.

I've had problems too with finding the right medication and it really does make you lose hope when things don't work out the way you need them to, in the time you need them to!

That 2 weeks sounds a sensible goal and then you can review together with your medical support team what steps (if any) to take next. Let's hope the mirtazapine does it's thing and you start to see those little chinks of little breaking through very soon.

I do feel for you - it's a lonely road when you're suffering with depression and anxiety, even when your not actually on your own, if you see what I mean.

I hope you pop back in a few weeks with a good news update.

    Take good care .

    Hi,

I've been on 15mg for nearly 4 weeks. I'm supposed to take 30mg but im afraid of an increase in anxiety.

did you notice any increase in anxiety or insomnia when you increased from 15 to 22.5?

I expect you'll need to take your current dose for a bit longer to see if it works. It says it can take 4-6 weeks before you feel any benefit so stick it out a bit longer.

    Wishing you all the best!
