2 Days on Orlistat

Hi

I have been to my doctors on and off now for about three years, I believe I am peripausal and have put on about 2 stone in 3 years, I was suspecting I had hypothyroidism and my last two blood tests said they were borderlinre normal ! however, I asked my doctor if I could maybe have a short trial of Thyroxine ( as I felt this would help my weight to drop off ! think the doc suspected this is what I wanted to go on it for) but he would not prescribe it for me, however at his suggestion he was willing to let me have a months trial of Orlistat and after reading some of these posts I was scared to death to try it ..anyhow I started it yesterday and so far so gud ( although I don't wish to speak to soon) Just wanted to ask when will the dreaded side effects start, must admit I padded myself up well so as not to get caught out  also I wanted to ask about the dosage, I know they recommend 3 x tablets daily but if 2 of your meals are low fat do you still need to take the recommended dosage in order to get the full benefits of this medication.

Thanks in advance

    hi honeyangel

With regards to the side effects not everyone suffers with them. Especially if you are eating low fat food.

so if you eat fatty food then you will get the dreaded side effects.

Im on day 7 and have been side effect free! guess i have been lucky so far.

Reading all the stories in here i am not suprised you were afraid of taking them. I was aprehensive in the beginning but thought \"no lets give it a go\"and i have not looked back since. 7 days in and im already feeling healthier and im more active which is great.

All the best with your coming weeks and weight loss!!

    regards

    Hi Honeyangel,

I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid about 5 years ago and it was only after putting on a lot of weight, my mum saying that I looked bloated and insisting that my GP did a blood test it was discovered. But I did lots of research into the condition and it turns out that in many cases the blood test shows up as borderline when there is an underlying propblem.

I think that ultimately you know your own body and if you have additional symtoms like: hair loss, cold hand/feet, lethargy (esp. in the mornings) & headaches you should insist on seeing a specialist.

I have also taken Orilstat and as long as you adhere to a low-fat diet you will be fine. The side-effects can be scary, but pass as long as you keep off the chocolate & chips!

    Good Luck

    Hi Int-1

How has your weight been since being on Thyroid meds ? and did you take Orlistat before being diagnosed or since you have been on med ??

It's now been 5 days since starting Orlistat and touch wood no side effects, I am eating healthier, but not sure if anything has changed, until I weigh myself on Monday..do you or anyone else know of Orlistat not working ?

    Thanks
