2 months of knee pain

Hi, I am new on here and looking for advice please. I've had this knee pain since the 16th December 2016 & have been off work since. I normally work as a cook and this pain just came on all of a sudden. I can't walk too far due to pain & know if I've walked too far as just then can't do anything for the rest of the day. If I stand still for a long time the pain sinks in after 2 minutes.

I've had a MRI scan & doctor says it came back all clear. I've been told to just rest as much as possible & it will eventually get better. I'm at the stage now that I just want to know what's caused the pain. I do have Rheamatoid arthritis & been told its nothing to do with the arthritis, I've been to physiotherapy & lately when I do the exercises I'm in more pain. Any advice please ? Thanks for reading

    Hi Karen

Did you injure your knee at all? It may be a soft tissue injury if so & won't necessarily show up on MRI. I had 2 years in the meniscus which never showed. Also the arthritis which eventually made this knee need TKR ( still to be done) did not show up as it was early stage!

If doing the RICE thing doesn't help, Physio doesn't help, you need to go back to your doctor! If you have been seeing just your GP ask for urgent referral to Orthopaedics & Trauma you need a specialist! Don't take no for an answer & press the point that you are suffering & cannot work! No work, no pay!!!

I hope you sort it soon.

Let us know how you get on.

      Hi Marilyn

      Thankyou for your reply.

No I didn't injure my knee. Although where I work at as cook in an elderly day centre I had 2 busy days preparing & cooking the Xmas lunch so was on my feet alot. I also done catering for my consins little girls christening so whether that had anything to do with it I don't know.

The pain came on all of a sudden the day after doing the Xmas lunch which was a Thursday. I saw my normal GP on the Friday who told me to rest over the weekend which I did. I went into on the Monday & Tuesday, by the end of my shift I was in alot of pain so my GP told me to take the rest of the week off & issued me with a medical.

After the Xmas holidays I returned to work on the 16th January & by the end of my shift I was in alot of pain. I been off work since then. Tried physio but just gives alot of pain, walking too far gives me pain and standing still in the same place for too long gives pain.

I was told that soft tissue damage won't show on a mri on Friday.

I will be definitely making an appointment with my GP.

      Will keep you updated.

When you're pushing through pain that pain is telling you that something is wrong. When you keep going there's a good possibility that a injury is present. When you said the pain came on suddenly sounds like an injury to me. Go to the orthopedist like Chico said and have them look at it.

      Hi Phil

The thing is I can't work how or if I did get an injury as hadn't really done anything different.

I will be definitely going back to my GP to get a referral.

      Thanks

It's not your job to figure it out...it's THEIRS!!!

2003 - Stuck out my leg to make a kick save in goal (hockey) and a guy falls, rolling my knee.  Doc went in...left femoral condyle cartilage shredded.

2006 - Sitting in my daughter's family room with the brand new tile floor I helped grout.  Got up off the couch and one of my sneaker treads got stuck between two tiles as I turned. Doc went in...right femoral condyle cartilage shredded.

Violent impact trauma...simple twist of the knee.  SAME RESULT.  Whether you know what caused your problem or not is irrelevant...what the docs find and how they fix you is more important than anything else right now.  See an ortho surgeon...follow the breadcrumbs...or Skittles...

Thank you for replying! Karen, a simple twist, awkward movement is all that it takes. And you're in pain for days weeks and even months. I'm 3 weeks post op on a revision and I know it's very early in recovery, but I was lying in bed and I was trying to get in a better position. I moved my leg sideways and I felt a pain that I didn't know existed and I was on bed rest for the next few days. My point think of anything that could have happened. I'm glad that you're getting into the ortho. Be blessed

Thank you so much Phil for the lovely words. I'm lucky to have the support from my close friend, two of my cousin's whose more like a brother & sister, my mum & step dad. I can't really say that about work cause they haven't been supportive at all.

Hope you soon recover from your operation.

    Hi Karen,

I think you have had good advice on here already.

Agree you need to stop second guessing the cause and get your GP to refer you to an Orthopaedic Consultant specialised in knees. ( presuming you will go NHS route)

If you go onto NHS choices you can find the profiles of your local hospitals Orthopaedic Consultants. It will show you their areas of interest

and surgical outcomes? , ( not that I'm saying you necessarily will require an op)l, against the National average. You can ask to be referred to a particular Consultant based on your research. Not many people realise this.

Please don't sit on this get yourself sorted you are use to chronic pain with your RA pain on top of this is far too much even with distraction therapy !! Get your GP to sort your pain relief out. What has your Rheumatologist said about this? Are your other joints having increased pain? Just wondering if your disease moderating drugs need reviewing.

I have had RA for over 30 years and you do have to be a bit assertive to get things sorted when you have a long term condition!. After 2 years of hell with my left knee I am 10 weeks post TKR but I had to push to see the Orthopaedic Consultant.

Don't be bolshy but tell them what you want referral wise. Let us know how you get on.

      Hi Jan

      Thankyou for you reply.

When this pain developed I was on the phone to the Rheamatology department & luckily I had an an appointment with one of nurses in January who told me that the pain wasn't due to the RA,my other joints are fine. This is then when afterwards my GP referred me for the mri scan. I'm taking Paracetamol & Tramadol for pain relief, I have had morphine too but don't really want to ask the doc for more.

Yes I will go down the nhs route.

I have also found online the National Rheamatoid Arthritis Society where they have been a great help.
