22 year old diagnosed with epiditimytis and prostatis. How did I get this?

Hello, this all started when I started having unprotected sex with a new partner it is no doubt the worst thing I've ever gone through on April 15. (In my defense we had both gotten STD tests before engaging.) 2 weeks later it burned when I peed, I was dribbling pee, and it was a very uncomfortable feeling. The clinic thought it was an STD until the urinalysis came back negative and they believed I had a yeast infection based on a rash that had developed all over my butt penis shaft and thighs. They gave me a flucanazole tablet and sent me on my way pending an std test which came back negative.

A month later after protected sex with the same partner. I developed symptoms like discharge, painful testicles, etc. General doctor tested me for stds blood and urine all negative.

A few days later I peed dried blood and the ER found out I have prostatitis and epiditimytis. Due to a bacterial infection Although I have yet to have anything appear on now 5 urinalysis w culture tests and my various negative std tests. She gave me 2

Weeks of doxycycline it went away.

SYMPTOMS returned with severe sharp pain in left side of penis head. (From the corona to the tip of the penis) and the next dr I saw found my prostate to be re infected and gave me 3 weeks of ciproflexin (no hernia, lumps on testicles, after analysis from latest dr visit.

After various std scares, tests, all this confusion no one has been able to tell me how the hell I got this "bacterial infection" to begin with?!

Men sometimes get bacterial infections (uti's) that aren't STDs without knowing the exact cause.  The bacterial infection can cause inflammation and if it spreads to your testes then you have epiditimytis. The important thing is that it appears you were treated adequately so I would leave it at that unless it keeps coming back. It's also sometimes cause by refluxed urine. Do you lift heavy weights by any chance? I had epiditimytis a couple of years ago and it's very painful so I can understand your concern. In my case, I think I got it because of an inadequately treated UTI that spread, but once treated properly, it never came back.

I dont lift weights (I'm a pretty slight guy) BUT I do work at a grocery store where I have to do a lot of lifting etc pushing lines of carts. I have found that most of the problems come after ejaculation. (I assume because the sperm is infected) but if I don't ejaculate the epiditimytis pain in my testicles becomes un bearable. One week into the cipro and unfortunately the symptoms come and go

I would suggest looking into Next Generation Sequencing (NGS). test for your urine. if you have an infection this test will find it and provide antibiotic recommendation . I had several tests that were negative and this test found two strains.

    good luck

Hey Michael I dont mean to high jack Jaws question, but I am curious how you were able to have this type type testing performed. I actually had never heard of it until I read your reply.  But it makes perfect sense, if you can find the exact strain of bacteria, then you would know what to treat it with.  I have had prostatitis off and on for 20 years, and have never had a urine test come back positive for anything.

      Thanks Joe

I will look into this when I see a urologist in a few weeks. Thanks

A friend of mine is a MD and he was wondering why my GP wasn't administering this type of test as well, or at the very least order a PSO test. What anti biotics

Have you taken? When I eventually got prescribed doxycycline my buddy the DR guaranteed me it would come back and that he couldn't understand why she would give me such a weak anti biotic usually used to treat acne.

Mine ended up coming back because it would have treated an infection caused by an std even tho that dr saw my negative results.

Hopefully cipro will knock it out

Thank you Derek 76 however, the only side effects I've had are nightmares and joint pain which is a hell of a lot better than painful yellow discharge coming from my penis and p*****g dried blood that looks like seaweed

Cipro is a drug to be very careful of and often side effects can often come long after it has penetrated your system.

I will IM you the lab info but it's really amazing. My uro in Tampa is called the end of the road in that people go to him after everyone else has failed. The lab sends back a report with the strain and most of the time it's several and what antibiotics to use based on the germs DNA resistance. For me i was put on Cipro before the test, then I had a semon test come back positive for staph. i was sent to infectious desese clinic and put on doxacilian before the DNA test came back. when the test game back it found a gram negative and a gram positive germ and said doxicilan and cipro was not recommended. Docter moved me to levaquin I am 10 days in and my urine stream is back to normal, no dribbling after I urinate but still have urithra dull pain but it's getting better. I will be on levaquin for 28 days. off for a week then tested again to be sure they are gone . The obvious points are cipro and doxicilan were given based on a best guess from the semen sample but it wasnt telling the who story keeping in mind my urin growth sample tested negative for growth, wbc and puss.... when the DNA test came back confirming the staph and finding another. The treatment is targeted and with the folliow up sample it in 2 weeks i can be100% sure its gone . The video on their website said and I believe out of 100 tested threw normal growth cultures 48 were positive, when run through the DNA, all 100 tested positive.

Thank you Michael, I look forward to reading more about this. I would caution you like some of the other guys were saying about the fluoroquinolone type antibiotics Levaquin,Cipro etc. I took several 28 day regiments of the Levaquin a few times over the years, for prostate infection. And in 2012 BOTH of my triceps tendons snapped at the same time. They were able to repair the right one, but after 5 surgeries on the left, I have no tendon at all on the left.

With all that being said any of us suffering from this will try pretty much anything no matter the risk.

I read about tendon issues.  I am 44 and work out 5 days a week, I am going to cut way back on the weights and move to cardio for a few weeks.  Cardio makes my urithra and penal pain go way for a few hours also. smile  Does anyone know more about the prostate injections?  I am going to ask my uro and would be open to seeing someone if this is not gone in 28 days but would like to find someone in FL?

What type of intercourse was involved? It could help explain the mechanism

Is your partner male or female? Was anal receptive intercourse involved?

    • Posted

Sorry should have been more specific. Male on female vaginal. No anal.

    Hi,

I have had this problem (Prostatitis) for seven years. Am currently on Doxycycline which doesn't seem to be helping at all. Could you give me information on the Dr. in Tampa who seems to help people with Prostatitis? I already know about DR. Bahn in Ca.

Hi, Dr Carrion at USF.  He used the Next Generation DNA test to learn what bug I had.  I am told 100% of the time, it's a bug and this test will find it.

    • Posted

Hi Michael never saw your reply because it got deleted. When they found the bug were they able to then figure out how you got this bacteria in your body?
    • Posted

no my uoi wasn't concerned nor was I i do think it's from sex but it's just an opinion i did ask and he said who knows

    • Posted

keep in mind the new dna testing is finding bacteria never found before meaning almost all cases on non bacterial prostatitis is in fact bacterial making a prostate bacteria infection much more common then thought

Wow that's crazy. In my case, I had gone a long time without having sex (my ex has severe lupus and sex is incredibly painful for her) once we broke up I started sleeping with this new girl. My doctor believes that the symptoms came as soon as I started sleeping with this girl because the sex aggravated my infected prostate. Meaning, I probably had this for a long time with no real symptoms. Which is incredibly scary. Prostate problems also run in my family.

For me being so young is the scariest part, I have found out a few friends my age who have had epiditimytis but no idea if there prostate was infected as well. Which would mean yes it is probably pretty common. My dr asked me if I had been having anal sex or perhaps she could have wiped backwards into her vagina accidentally. The only way I could have gotten it (sexually) if my STD tests came back negative.

yeah same here I had some issues about 10 years ago. went to a doctor did a urine sample and it was negative. He gave me muscle relaxers and it went away a few 18 months. since then sex aggregates it if i bent my penis just slightly causing a flairup. it has come and gone to various degrees a dozen xs. I finally found a good uro who didn't stop after the negative culture. found a bug in my semen and a bug in my urine. one is gram neg and one is gram positive. I am on Leviquin but have doubts it's going to work . I am on the right antibiotics but I understand that after having the infection for so long it can be difficult to get rid of. at the end of the day I will keep trying the antibiotics in till it's gone and will retest using the DNA test to be sure. I am married and will always use a condone. The bacteria I have is found on skine, how it got in my prostate is unknown. masterbation? normal sex? who knows but I have had this for 10 years. excuse the typos, I am on my phone in the mall...lol

    • Posted

yeah it's not an STD in the normal sense but think sex was the pathway in for a common germ. I am 44 and got this at 35

    • Posted

What you bring up about the bacteria found on the skin .. did you ever get a rash? Mine all started two days after seeing my doc about a fungal skin rash on my genitals which has gone away with Cream and drinking apple cider vinegar. Wonder if all connected.
    • Posted

also just curious, have you ever passed anything? Dried blood, prostate stone etc? I passed a small greenish black matter twice now.
    • Posted

It's all possible. It's coming to and end now that the bug has been identified. I do suggest getting the DNA test done after you are feeling better to be sure. otherwise you will have this over and over unless u are sure its gone.

I had hernia surgery in Dec and the next day I had horrible urinary burning and prostate fluid discharge, it was white. I think that is where I got one of my two germs . that is all the discharge I have had
    • Posted

I had a weeks worth of yellow discharge especially when I would sleep. I would wake up and it looked like someone had smeared a bright yellow highlighter all over my boxers. (Which is why the first 3 doctors I went to thought it was an ghonnorea chlymidia. I then peed out what I thought was a kidney stone turned out to be dried blood. Awful.

I've twice had epididimytis but never weird symptoms like you are having. With me it was basically testicular pain in the left testicle.

    • Posted

Since I had the prostate infection with epiditimytis the dried was likely sent from my infected prostate according to my GP
    • Posted

I'm not sure the name but they even did the culture test where they wait and see if bacteria or something grows in 24 hours and everything was normal

    • Posted

I strongly suggest getring the DNA test done It will find what it is
    • Posted

Is this a new widely known thing or only available to a specialist like a urologist? The wait time to see a urologist is unbelievable. About a month
    • Posted

Even with prostatitis several times over the years I had nothing like that.
    • Posted

      Derek,

Same here. But the pain was severe. One testicle doubled in size. Needed to wear a special scrotal support to be able to walk around. Not fun. Blame it on my first cath PA who was reluctant to, and then under treated a UTI.

No one has been able to tell me what that discharge was exactly and it never occurred when I was at the dr or I would have gotten it tested. I'm willing to bet that I picked up the yeast infection from the girl and I had a prostate infection all at the same time. Very rough times for my penis

    • Posted

Save some of the discharge next time and take it to the doctor.

Seems that you and the girl are incompatible.

I don't know how widely the test is used. My insurance covered it and it was $170. I will IM you the name. Like with all new technology it takes time for it to go mainstream. For me, knowing what kind of bug made all the difference in my treatment.

    • Posted

Thanks for this. I have been on the Levaquine for 12 days and I am finally feeling almost norma! I was on cipro and doxe as a hope and guess treatment. Once the DNA test came back with the know bugs, the test recommended Levaquine based on the know bugs resistant. Moved to Levaquin and it's workng. If the oral doesn't work in completely killing it I will most likely move to another antibiotic that is suggested from the DNA results including IV. The injections are not covered under insurance and I live in FL making the shots at 10k treatment. This will be my last resort.

ALL my problems come from ejaculation now. It burns, and I can feel discomfort all the way down to my butt / prostate area.

Also have uncontrollable urges to pee when held for long enough

    • Posted

have your doc do a semen culture at a minimum. My urin was negative but my semen was positive for staph E
    • Posted

I'm going to email my dr right now about the semen culture. Unfortunately he isn't very willing to do anything. He either said it was a UTI or an STD and when I tested negative for both he was at a loss. Never brought up a prostate problem at all.

    • Posted

He was also like sometimes guys have these problems after peed dried blood lol like what

a little update, as i predicted dr wont administer the semen culture. Finally seeing a urologist in 2 weeks.

good choice..i am having my system scoped next Friday with a camera. my infection is not going away and want to know why.

Mine seems to only hurt now when I drink Alcohol / masturbate. My opening has become red bc the sperm burns awful

yes ejaculation really upsets my symptoms and have cut back making me the situation that much harder. I saw my uro yesterday and he said the bacteria I have is most likely making a bad situation worse but is not the only thing wrong . I have pelvic floor tension and been to PT for the last few months and has finally got my pelvic floor tension reaolved,, my hips are twisted and crooked and been to a chiropractor and has helped greatly but still have more work to go and I have bacteria. i am a very active and health 44yr old but all my body abuse over the years has finally caught up to me. Uro did a rectal yesterday and my prostate was feeling much much better. The right side was painless when he pushed on it to milk it. The left side hurt really bad and is still inflamed and presumably holding infection. He took a urine sample again after milking the prostate and ordered a transrectal ultrasound and a prostate scope for August 2 to look for anything out of the norm. I have two more weeks of Levaquin and then the urin DNA test again to close the bacteria loop. I have an appointment with a spine and nerve doctor next week to get my twisted hips sorted out, the chiropractor can't figure out why they won't hold after he adjust and why my urinary symptoms are greatly improved after his adjustments . I sound like an old decrbid mad but I am not. The uro said hip and spine issues lead to pelvic floor tension which lead to infection due to urine retention. Thank God for great insurance...

I am officially off cipro. My only symptom now is weak erection and clumpy sperm which both can be side effects of the cipro so I'm crossing my fingers

Finally saw a urologist put me back on doxycycline for 6 weeks checked my prostate swollen A LOT of pain when he checked it. Have to /limit -eliminate spicy foods alcohol caffeine for the next 6-12 weeks. And limit alcohol consumption going forward

Hi, was a bug found? Doxicilan is not going to work on all bugs. I would still demand the urin DNA test. Staph epidimias was in my semen and 2 others in my urin only found on the DNA . 1 was sensitive to Doxicilan and the other 2 were not.

Hello Michael and all others following this thread. just a little update my urologist has found that I suffer from non bacterial prostatitis which is extremely rare for someone my age. It runs in my family and i basically drank myself into the issue. I know avoid beer as the yeast festers in my gland and the problems arise. However, I have sought the help of a cannabis dr here in California who has with the help of a new diet completely changed my life. I smoke a tiny bit every other day and It relaxes my bladder and prostate. My swelling has gone down. GIve it a try
    • Posted

Thanks for the update. I have smoked recreational from time to time and it does help with the discomfort but its just for a few hours and I never get a good night sleep so I havent considered this an option. When do you smoke, morning, afternoon or before bed?
