2nd Outbreak

Posted , 6 users are following.

I was diagnosed with genital HSV 1 a little over a month ago with my first major outbreak. At the same time I had my menstrual period. I have just begun another menstrual period and along with it, I have another out, however much milder.

Is it common to have an outbreak with each menstrual period?

I was coming off my first outbreak (which was bad) when I got my period, and nothing happened. I've read articles saying it can be a trigger, and some that say there is no correlation, so I think it's probably an individual thing.

I also have genital hsv 1. I'm on suppressive therapy but yet and still whenever my period is coming the area begins to itch and tingle a little. Annoying but thank goodness it's not a full blown outbreak.

How many outbreaks have you had and how long have you taken the suppressive theropy?

My doctor put me on it as soon as he saw that it was herpes. So it has been almost two months. I hope I never have another one again because it's soooo freakin horrible!

I have an appointment with my PCP and I will ask to be put on a theraputic dose.

The 2nd is not nearly as bad as the 1st, but still is uncomfortable.

They (HSV experts, at least) don't usually advise suppressive therapy for Type 1, since it's far less infectious and tends to recur/shed much less. You may find that it settles down after more observation.

I'm so worried about passing this on to someone.  I had sex (protected) for the first time since my diagnosis, and I couldn't relax.

Yeah and if you decide not to use it for suppressive therapy it'll be good to have on hand for when you do feel an outbreak coming on!

Was it with a regular partner who knows and is definitely negative? Because if so, then that's a risk he's prepared to take, so try to relax, though I appreciate the worry nevertheless. If he has HSV-1 orally, even if from ages ago, he *should* be protected genitally, so even better! Are you sure sex wasn't the trigger, btw?

Menstruation may be a trigger for some women, but not others. Few studies have been done on the topic, but where it was looked at, no correlation was found, so the evidence remains anecdotal. GH is highly individual-specific. Menstruation does not appear to be a trigger for me. I have Type 2.

Hi, I was curious what your Ob's are like for hsv1 on your genitals. Are they weeping type sores or are they just red dots that look like bumps or bug bites? I ask because I recently took a blood test and was positive for hsv1 and negative for hsv2, but I only get little red bumps on my butt. I have been to a dermatologist and planned parenthood and both times been told these bumps are not herpes. This is by visual only since both times I was told there is nothing they can swab. I find that hard to believe since I get tingling and weird twitching when these bumps present.

      Hi,

I actually had the weeping, painful sores.  Count your blessings that you haven't had them.

This whole herpes thing is very bizzare to me. Hopefully your outbreaks will start to calm down. I hear that happens with hsv1 genital.

Yes, it is very bizzare and there is so much conflicting information on the internet.  My OB/GYN was useless in providing me with information.
