4 DAYS POST NEW HIP BUT PAINFUL KNEE NOW!

Posted , 9 users are following.

Hi. I had my hip replacement last Wednesday and I am home doing the exercises etc.  Before I went in my knee on the same leg had been playing up although an X Ray showed no arthritis.  Now it is really painful and inhibiting my exercises.

It swells a bit and feels a bit loose but not much - could it all be caused by the bad hip - alignment and what have you.  The knee

started misbehaving about five months ago.

    Hello Mumsy

I can only give you my experience. Before the op I had 10 ys of hip/leg pain and weakness. I didn't know I had osteo arthritis, blaming it on an old motorcycle accident. The last 12 months preop I was limping bad and yes my knee started to ache spasmodically. I am now nearly three weeks post op and my knee has been complaining since I started using it. As others have said on similar posts it appears that the body is having to get used to being realligned esp our knees after yrs of being out of sync. My knee is improving and has stopped hurting at night. I saw a big shift at the end of week two.

    Good luck with it!

    Hi Mumsy ...

How did you sleep ?   I am sorry that you are in pain right now, but this can be expected so soon after THR ...

My right knee (I had R THR) was so painful prior the surgery that I asked for a knee brace or anything to make it feel more stable - My Physical Therapist taped it but it didn't help ... after surgery it was painful due to the body re-alligning and adjusted to new hip ... now my left hip needs THR and low and behold, the left knee is acting up !!!

you are still very early in recovering and are doing really well .. I couldn't do anything at 4 days post op but go to the loo and shuffle around ...

take care sweetheart - patience and be gentle with your self

    Hi

I had a RTHR two week ago today smile  All down the right side of my leg was very swollen and around my knee was the worse, the swelling has just gone down, but it stopped me from getting on with my exercises and movement has been very restricted. I am seeing my Physio tomorrow and will ask get her to look at my knee just to make sure all is ok. The swelling is much better today

     Have a good day

      Hi katie ...

Just listen to your body ...she knows best and will let you know - it will be some kind of a roller coaster - try to not compare your self to others or what you should be doing or shouldn't feel, okay ... we all heal at our own speed ...

      warm hug

I had swelling of the knee before my op, I was convinced it was my knee causing all the pain.. My Consultant said it was the hip and they would always do a hip op first as it was easier than the knee. Since the op my knee swells a bit but he was right the pain came from my hip. use the ice packs they work wonders on the swellings and pain. xx

    Hi Mumsy ...

I just read your reply on another topic regarding your fear of dislocating your new hip joint ... I was the same .. they scared the living daylight out of me ... so I know how you feel... I had not found this forum yet ... 14 days post op my staples were removed and the physician's assistant was not too gentle with manipulating my hip ... I told him about my fear of dislocating hip and he tols me that the hip joint is secure in the socket - dislocating it is not that easy .. however the tissue, tendons and muscles are severed and fragile while being repaired ... sort of knitting it back together is what I envision ... so I eased up a bit, but still am careful ...

Hope this helps you a bit and make you more confident and trust your body ...

    warm hug

It's possibly the trauma of the actual surgery when they manipulate the leg to dislocate the hip. I've had the surgery on both hips and both times they knackered the knee a bit. First time I had physio on it and the second time it seems to be improving slowly. My knee was playing up before the op  and I can't kneel and like you no arthritis but normal wear and tear according to the xray. The surgery just made it worse and it takes time to settle.

I'll echo what others have said -  for a few years my whole body, I think, adjusted to having osteoarthritis. I know I was walking like a chimp and my slippers all wore out on the outsides. Now, with one fixed it is making those adjustments again only not so slowly! My op leg is shorter and straighter and doesn't my knee moan about it!

I will be 4 weeks post op tomorrow, can trust my balance and body a bit more and I am feeling good. Hang in there, your body is an amazing piece of engineering, just give it a chance to do its thing xxxxx

Hi mumsy, I'm just four days post op, right ceramic hip replacement. Had left  hip two years ago.  I returned to full riding, cycling by just doing my exercises. I too, have anxiety about getting back on my horse but will keep exercising, walking and learning to be patient! Good luck, I'll look out to hear how it goes,

I am sorry you are in pain but remember it will not last forever. My knee hurt before the surgery and it hurts ow as I try and rebuild muscles on that side of my body. we must remember how long we had been limping around with a bad hip, well at least I did for more years than I can count. This will throw your body out of wack and we use different muscles while lomping through life. So as long as your surgeon thinks all is well jus thang in there.  Remember you have this forum of giving people that will help you out through all of this you are not alone.

I know - just can't believe how my whole body hurts so much!  Yesterday I did did three laps of the bedroom a few times and up and down the stairs once (for the first time) and I honestly feel as though I have been run over by a bus!  Upwards and onwards!!

I had my op last Friday night and now keep my toilet seat upstairs to make me walk upstairs to pee. After a rubbish nights sleep I've decided to keep up with the prescribed pain relief.

    Just keep going Mumsy!
