Finally feel as if i'm getting my life back after the most miserable 4 months from Nov.(surgery 2nd Nov)....Didnt believe people when they said it would get better ...but it has !!! Groin pain gone, good range of movement and more energy ,actually really delighted i got it done (cant believe i'm typing that )..for me the best thing ive done is go swimming 2-3 times a week ..my surgeon said ok for breast stroke but not to exert the leg . I'm now back teaching my beloved pilates and a tiny bit of yoga ...I feel like me again and my hip feels so strong ..So for all those struggling please go at your own pace ,rest when you need to ,do your stretches ..it is a slow process .To think of that horrible, debilitating groin pain which i ignored for sooo long ..its gone and i cant quite believe it .If you need a thr then get it done ..honestly ..gx

Gail, That is fantastic news, and it should spur on all the hippies who are in the early stages of recovery.

    Wishing you all the best!

Great News Gail, it is a long haul for some of us, it took me 6 months to feel well again but did not regret it, now 18 months on, dancing and exercising in the gym.

Pilates is what I am doing. Found a video that I use almost daily. And I ride the stationary bike for almost half hour daily. I am three months today. Physically pretty good except for lower back pain first thing upon waking. Any suggestions? Thanks for the encouraging news

Do be VERY CAREFUL regarding your leg action with the breaststroke. Twenty years ago I had a total hip replacement and did a huge amount without an issue, actually most of the time had no idea that I gad had a hip replacement!

Then six weeks ago I picked up swimming to keep fit for the first in about twenty years. I steadily increased the distance I was swimming every other day to over half a mile....... THEN a couple of weeks ago it failed, whilst getting to my feet after putting some plants in a plant pot!

I suspect this was due to my strong keg action whilst swimming so I do really urge you to use the leg action for the crawl when doing the breaststroke. I'm now waiting for revision surgery and a so cross with myself.

      Hi Richard,

Gosh that is a good warning!  When you said your hip failed do you mean dislocated?  If it discloates do you have to have revision hip surgery?  Just 11 weeks post op and have been so nervous so far.

Really had hoped to beable to swim again(breast stroke only stroke can do!)   Think maybe need some swimming lessons!!

Your advice is good advice though.  All the best for your forthcoming op.

Oh my goodness.  Thanks for the warning.  I'll be extra careful this summer when I get back in the water.  Take care!

I do some pilates leg exercises in the water to start and am only doing about 8-10 lengths per session ..I'm being really careful but thanks for your wise words ...and hope op goes well gx

It did not become dislocated. Here's what happened to me. I had been crouching or kneeling down whilst planting some seedlings into a larger pot and when I came to stand up there was a horrible sound and feeling from the hip joint just like crunching of large particles along with an eye watering pain.

After dragging myself the few feet indoors I rang 111 for suggestions and was told not to move until paramedics arrived. After a wait of about an hour they arrived, checked me over and put me on a stretcher and into the ambulance and then off to the local hospital for the next seven hours!

Three x-rays later I was told to try standing and the with, support

Oh dear such a fiddle doing this on a phone and sent too soon...fingers too big! After the standing a support short walk before being sent home as they could not do anything as they did not have details of my twenty year old prosthesis.

On arriving home in a taxi as I walked the few teds to the house my hip was making a mould squeaking and I. Had a lot of discomfort.

Well there you have it. I've selected a surgeon with a lot of hip reion work and a

To continue I've got an appointment to see my chosen surgeon in a couple of weeks time so hopefully it will not be too long a wait for surgery. I'm just hoping that the hip will stay together for enough time!

Thanks, revisions are not as straight forward as primary replacement hip surgery but at twenty years old it was overdue for failing so if successful it should see me out!
