4 weeks 4 days post thr turning point

Today was a turning point and I felt I should share. Anyone that read my previous posts will know that I was concerned about my progress after 4 weeks as it seemed to slow down. I have, throughout each day, been trying to walk without my crutches and after a few steps, felt pain on the hip joint and groin and had been reassured by you lovely people that my body will tell me when I am ready and not to push it. Well, today, after 4 weeks and 4 days, I made my way upstairs (I have been leaving one crutch at the top and one at the bottom of the stairs and following the safe method) and I made my way to my bedroom before realising that I hadn't picked up my crutch! I think that maybe I have been overthinking things. I have since returned to my crutch and continued using it for the rest of the day but am looking forward to seeing what I can achieve tomorrow. Onwards and upwards 😁

Great work. It really is just the little things you can try/ accomplish that can make your day. Took me nearly 6 wks before I could go upstairs carrying my walker. I really needed to have a half decent shower so I sat on the corner edge of the bath and leaned forward so I could feel the spray of the hot shower. What bliss!!! Yes, those little steps do add up.

Hi Alan
Good luck with your op. I wish I had known about this forum before I had mine done. Get as much information as you can before hand and let us know how you get on.

i am so pleased for you that things are going well and you have managed to turn that point. I didnt have a FRH i had mine pinned after a fall 5 weeks ago today and i am stilll struggling. I dont have to worry about stairs as i am disabled so have a stair lift but im walking around with my walker slowly and managing most things but i find continious walks to the kitchen to make a drink really takes it out of me and also i am getting a pain in the inner thigh area. Its still quite swollen and this is worrying me. My physio thinks its just post op pain and will settle over time but i google to much and think something is wrong. The pain is not unbearable but its there. I cant ask my surgeon as dont no how to get in touch with him and my Dr surgery is no help. If i could just stop worrying about this thigh / groin pain as hindering my recovery.
Anyway like i said well done and im so pleased for you, hopefully i will see the turning point soon.

Hi Mandy. I was worried about the pain I experienced when I tried to walk and so many people had said they were pain free straight after the Op and when I googled it, it said there could be a problem with the joint, tendons etc. I don't think the professionals give you as much information on the reality of surgery and what to expect once home. I certainly wasn't prepared and having never having any kind of surgery, I found the whole experience very daunting. I did go for a hip class ,but they only show you how to get around, get dressed, stand up etc and I had no idea how difficult it would be once I was home. I would imagine that having pins would take longer to heal and the swelling will cause pain. I thought that my swelling had gone (because it wasn't visible on the outside any more) , but it wasn't until yesterday that it felt normal. You could try calling the ward you were on (the information should be on your discharge paperwork) to put your mind at rest. The staff on our ward were brilliant and should be able to put you in touch with the surgeons secretary if you need to arrange a follow up appointment. Good luck and try not to worry, you will get there.

Thanks for your reply. I totally agree that i wasnt prepared for all this either like the dressing, standing etc but slowly getting there. I will see if i can get in touch with the staff at the hospital as i have no follow up appointments. Did you also suffer with inner thigh pain as this is what worries me most. Yesterday i did quite a lot now today im feeling a bit unsteady even with my walker . My confidence has taken a big knock and the fear of falling again is in the back of my mind. Im determined to push through the pain but when i googled it it said things like tendons etc which scared me but then again it could be the internal bruising from the op. Im so pleased you are now doing well as lifts your spirits up as can see light at the end of the tunnel.

My pain was deep in the hip and in the groin and had tightness everywhere. If you feel unsteady or in a lot of pain, I wouldn't push it. listen to your body and try again tomorrow. If you can't do it tomorrow, try the next day and one day, you will realise how much more you can do. Good luck.
