4th Dermoid Cyst on same ovary...

Hi,

I'm feeling particularly rubbish as I have just found out I have a fourth dermoid cyst on my right ovary.

I have had a new dermoid cyst appear every year for the past 4 years, I have had laparscopic surgery for each of them and gone through absolute hell. I am 27 years old and I only have a tiny amount (less than 1cm) left of my right ovary and I am fed up. On my thrid op, I was feeling the same and asked my surgeon to remove what was left of my right ovary due to the fact that they were constantly reoccurring. The surgeon refused, saying that as I dont have children.

Has anyone else had reoccurring dermoids like this?

Hi Amy, sorry to hear you are going through all of this. Are the dermoid cysts occurring only on one ovary. My surgeon removed my affected ovary (I already had one child but he knew we were trying to conceive) as he said that the remaining ovary will simply take over

I hope that is of some use to you, take care

    Hi Kelly,

Yes, every single dermoid has been on my right ovary. I'm in the situation where the dermoid cyst is now four times the size of my ovary.

Can I ask, how has it been since you had your ovary removed? I'm too scared to go back to the surgeon I had, because he kept saying I had no reason for the unbearable pain I was in. So I am now awaiting an appointment to see another surgeon.

How many dermoids have you had? Have you managed to have more children since you had your ovary removed?

Thank you so much for replying, never thought I would broadcast my life on the internet, but I'm so fed up.

I was admitted about 4 years ago as they thought I was having an ectopic pregnancy but scan showed I had 3 cysts one of which was dermoid. They advised full removal of affected ovary and I was on op table a fortnight later. After the surgery they advised me that they removed all but a tiny sliver which was stuck to my bowel and they couldn't remove due to bleeding too much, but the ovary would be non functional (this is what I am having removed in a few weeks due to recurring simple and hemorrhagic cysts)

Yes we did go on to have another baby (she turns one next month smile ) it took us a long time but we were older and I had other problems aswell. I would seriously ask for the removal if that is what you want. The pain is awful  and it will affect quality of life for you. As my surgeon said you will still have a remaining ovary so it should not have an effect.

as for broadcasting life on internet you are anonymous, and you are reaching out to a wide support network, don't get upset about that. Xx

Sorry for all of the questions, and thank you so much for answering them. I remember when I had my last dermoid cyst 1 1/2 years ago, the surgeon said that if I had any more he would write a book about me. Unfortunately the treatment I received was so poor and I felt so awful I can't go back to him.

I'm so pleased for you that you want on to have more children. I have been in a relationship for a year, and to be honest, the thought of children is the furthest thig from my mind.

Did they do your removal as open surgery or laparascopy?

Thank you so much for your support, sometimes it just feels as though its one problem after another! xx

You dont have to go back to him. You do have the option to chose where you go for your care. My gp has referred me to a private hospital for the surgery I'm about to have

I had my surgery via key hole, there is the risk they may have to open up but   That's more for when there are complications or size of cyst.

My current surgeon has advised me they may not be able to do it by keyhole this time due to the adhesions to my bowel

I hope it goes well for you, it seems like you are being looked after really well though.

I work in healthcare and I don't get referred like that! You must be very persuasive :-)

Well I used to be a nurse, that might have something to do with it, but I suppose my gp has just been very empathetic

Ca125 is a measurement which isn't reliable when premenopausal as endometriosis amongst other things can elevate those levels xx

    Hi Amy,

I had a large ovarian cyst that was 10cm on my left ovary which appeared at the end of my first pregnancy when I was nearly 28.  I was in a lot of pain and nobody could find out why.  I had to sleep sat up for the last two weeks of my pregnancy and the pain was excruciating when my baby kicked. :-(   My GP found the cyst 3 weeks after I had given birth and sent me right to hospital for a scan.  I saw my consultant after the scan and he said he would leave it two weeks to see if it reduced.  Two weeks later it hadn't reduced so he had me in to operate within 6 days.   I had a CA125 blood test that came out higher than it should so that's why the rushed me in so quickly.

He operated and found the cyst had twisted on it's stalk and cut the blood supply off so that's what was causing all the pain (which did ease off after the birth as my baby wasn't playing football with it any longer lol).  He removed my left ovary and tube and left the right one although I think he said there were cysts on that one too.  I had my operation in March 1991 and by May 1991 I was pregnant (not intentionally lol) with my second baby.   I went on to have a 3rd child with my new partner when I was nearly 37 (also not planned lol) so one ovary can work just as good as two so don't lose hope xxx.

I have another cyst now so in 3 weeks time I'm having a total hysterectomy as I'm nearly 51 now.

      Hi Janet,

Thanks for your reply, sounds like you went through a lot! Funnily enough, although they have mentioned the CA125, and have said that they would perform it, in the last 3 operations I have never had one.

I have had simple fluid-filled cysts as well, but they don't bother me, its just the dermoids.

I think from hearing what people are saying, I need to be firm this time and just demand the ovary out, I can't go through this every year.

I think its sometimes hard for women, as we are being judged by a profession dominated by men who have no idea what it is like!

      Thanks for your reply xx

    Hi Amy,

Sorry I meant to say that my cyst and ovary were absolutely fine even though the CA125 was high, apparently other things can make the reading high too.  I was very stressed though for that 6 days as my baby was only 5 weeks old when I went back into hospital.

The he cyst I have now was 4.7cm when I had my first scans in March this year but I was referred for an MRI because there is a dark bit on the wall of the cyst that they can't be 100% about unless they take it out and do a biopsy.  I had a womb biopsy, smear test and CA125 test and they all came back normal so hopefully this cyst is nothing yo worr about confused
