Glad you are making good progress. I am 22 days post op and had scarf akin procedure with two toes straghtened,

Pain has not been too bad and even managed to go out for a meal with

friends last week which was good. However I was so exhausted when I got home I could not wait to get to bed.

I was heel walking for the first 2 weeks but consultant said I could fully

weight bear with crutches in a flatter type of orthapaedic shoe. Feels

much better but my foot quickly tells me when I have overdone things

and I am still spending most of my time with foot elevated. Hope that

you continue to have a good recovery.

I retired from work a couple of years ago so I do not have to worry about going back to work.

Sounds like your doing well smile keep it up although it's not classed as major surgery the procedures do take lot of recovery I was only given a flat Ortho shoe and no crutches so walking has been hard to get used to just hope it hasn't hindered recovery feels ok but can never tell x

I'm at six days too. I took six weeks off of work, my job is very busy I have to be on my feet and running a lot, so I will look forward to hearing how it goes for you at 5 weeks to help me determine if this is something I can do. I know its only been 6 days but at this point it's hard to see myself walking normal and being quick at anything for a while. I know I've said it before and other posts, but I am so grateful for this forum and the ability to share experiences, thank you!

Hi Lyne, Well, the worst bit is over and now a good recovery is up to you. I'm at 11 weeks and I'm still getting occasional 'toothache' in the bones around operation area on 'nerve jumpings' too although not as frequently; I still shout "Ouch" and jump when it happens. I began walking and putting full weight on my foot at around 6/7 weeks. Even now though at 11 wks I still find that after I've been on my feet for several hours my foot gets swollen and aches, so I have to elevate it until all is well. Walking out with my normal walking flat shoes (Ecco shoes) is pretty good but I still feel a little 'wooden' as if I have a slight limp but after watching my reflection in a shop window yesterday, I could see no sign of a limp. I think it's because I haven't yet got back that 'spring' in my walking action. Around the house I find Crocs a dream to wear and my consultant's registrar said he had no objections to me wearing them. As you probably know you shouldn't be doing too much on your feet for the first two weeks. Apart from walking around just for a few minutes - heel walking as you're doing is good and excellent for the circulation even though it does make yours hips ache you get used to it - but resting that foot is key to a good recovery at this stage. So continue to elevate it higher that your heart for most of the time and elevate in bed too. On Thursday when you have your foot checked they will tell you what exercises you can start doing. I began toe bending exercises at that stage and even more gentle heel walking around the house and garden. I was able to drive again at 7 weeks when I could operate the clutch with no discomfort and I began walking with 'full weight' bearing on that foot at the same time. I wouldn't like to say whether you'll be able to return to doing a 12hr shift so soon. I think you'll have to wait and see how you go. Personally I am thinking it might just be too much too soon. Sitting here typing this you see, even at 11 weeks my foot is still jumpy a little, and making me aware it's there - if you know what I mean and if I've been on my feet for several hours - my foot certainly lets me know it's not happy. If you are young, fit and slim I guess you'd do better on your feet all day than someone like me who is slightly overweight at a size 16 for instance. Anyway, good luck and I hope all be continue to go well.  I must admit I'm delighted with my results and can't wait now to get my other foot done. By the way I'm (a young) 70 going on 17!!   Best wishes, LadyPink

Your right about so many things thank you I'm being careful and get about cautiously trying to keep my legs moving while sat elevating my foot I'm generally fit and well but not youngster (54) and my job is very hectic so certainly won't rush back i want this to be a success as will be going for my other foot maybe end of year, I can't wait to see how my foot will look when it's all healed, will be speaking to my ward manager soon but I think will visit occupational health before going back. Those strange nerve type movements and pains are odd but on the whole I'd say it isn't as bad as I expected although ask me again when I'm having to walk on it properly smile

Hi, I thought I'd throw my tuppence worth in here. I'm 38 days post op (not that I'm counting) I have an appointment with my surgeon later today. I am still in heel walking boots. I have no pain when I'm resting with feet up but they really ache when I walk or even just sit with them down for any length of time. They are still quite swollen and turn a purpley pink colour when not elevated. Funny thing is my feet really ache at night when I'm trying to sleep. I too have suffered from restless legs. I keep thinking it is because having no distraction I'm focusing on my feet all the time. As for work? I can't imagine going back to work any time soon. Although I have a desk job the fact that I had both feet done means that it would be impossible for me to elevate them at work. I also have a long car journey to work. It would be unwise to have only 5 weeks off for this op. I'm planning to stayaway as long as possible. I'm 56 and had no sick leave for years so I will put my guilty feelings away and concentrate on my own health for a change.
