6 week consultancy--90degrees

The next item on my list of question to my surgeon was when could I bend more than 90 degrees at the waste. I asked this question because I hadn't been able to find a definitive answer.

My surgeon responded that the threat of dislocation from bending(not falling of course) should be over from 6-8 weeks. I'm a bit hesitant about trying it out so can anyone give some advice on this and your experience

I was basically told the 90 degree ends after 3 months.

Mine ended at 7 weeks, I am in US though. Only one lifetime restriction, not to bend from knee down sideways, my doctor said no one should do this even with good hops.

I was very careful to not go beyond the 90 degree, too scared of dislocation and chance it reopening incision and delaying healing. However I did learn you can do the golfer bend when you bend keeping you leg straight behind you, be sure to hang onto something to steady yourself and be sure to bend the good knee a little..works great I am 14 weeks and still do it when I have to bend real low.

Hi Deborah I too use the golfers bend  It has made post op recovery so much easier. I am only 1 week post op and have become paranoid about dislocation. I constantly forget about the 90 degree restriction. I was  dreaming the night before last that my hip had dislocated and I had to go back to theatre! 😬

I worried too. My doctor took me off restrictions at 7 weeks but I was still very careful. Now at 14 weeks I still worry, he wanted me to start trying to put my foot across my knee to put shoes and socks on. I can do the good leg but the operated leg gets there but the hip isn't stretched enough for my leg to flatten out. I'm afraid to try. I can bend over some with leg out in front of me and get my sock and shoe on, a lot of work and I have a bit too much stomach.

All in good time. I can't believe how good hip feels 1 week after surgery.  So good to know that we can eventually cross our legs again.ive been given strengthening exercises but no mentions fb stretchiing. My hospital doesnt do physio follow up as an out patient. Will have to glean stretches from the Internet

Click "Hip Replacement" just above the "Unfollow this discussion" button, and look at info in the very top post in there.  Useful information links inside. including some on post-op exercises.

I found I just started bending without thinking as time went on. And once I'd done it a few times I relaxed about it. I was paranoid about the threat of dislocation, it's all anyone seemed to say to me....don't bend, don't sleep in your side, don't twist, don't cross your legs - it'll dislocate. Scary stuff but as time goes on the risk is less

The risk of dislocation tapers off. That's why we don't get a definitive answer. The chart on the page below shows the risk of dislocation matched to the number of weeks post op.
