7 week Check up with surgeon

I have been to see my specialist today for my follow up and he is not at all happy with the bend in my knee and thinks I should have manipulation almost straight away.  He would do it tomorrow if I wanted.  Initially he thought the bend was just 70 degrees but it is 85-90.  The thought of having this done straight away is too much for me and I would rather try to get dome improvement on the bend.

i saw a different Physio prior to the visit to surgeon and thus one was excellent and gave me different exercises to do to try to improve the bend.

can anyone give me their thoughts on this.  I am totally depressed by this and just don't know what to do for the best.

I have ordered a set of pedals, like a recumbent bicycle to also improve the bend.  This should arrive on Monday.

Just want to say firstly I couldn't have done this without your encouragement.  My hubby has not read any of the postings but knows how much faith I have I your comments that'll 3am today we made the decision to go for it.

a lot of strings were pulled to get me in and the main reason is I live in Cyprus and at 3.30 today the operation went ahead.  My surgeon told me as I was waiting on the anaesthetic to kick in that I made the correct decision.  He woul,d have gone the same.

i came round, a lot òf pain but apparently from the horses mouth I was told that he had to do a lot more manipulation than he anticipated and I would never have got the bend on my own.  I had a large scar from when I fell on it  in my twenties so this I think was the problem.

anyway to cut a long story short as I am exhausted I am now in the hotel next door and I achieved at least a 100 degree angle either no pain whatsoever.  I have to work hard to maintain and improve this, which I will, but in the meantime I am exhausted and must try for sleep.

thank you from the bottom of my heart.

      Great news, Liz.

I am really pleased that you went ahead with it (under the circumstances), and that you've seen such good results.

Make sure that you have a good rest now.

I'm so very happy for you that you made the right decision to go ahead with the manipulation. I know this is going to be a new start for you now. Imagine how much easier physiotherapy is going to go now? You've jumped a big hurdle today in your rehabilitation, and good for you!

      Cheers and continued good progress.

Hello Liz: You made the right decision for you. I can't wait to hear how you feel. I am thinking I may end of needing this since I have a limp and can't go down the stairs properly. I can bend my leg up as far as my good leg, can't bend it backwards (up toward my butt as far as my good leg), and it feels SO tight! I hope this helped you and that you on your way to fast recovery!

Firstly I slept for 5.5 hours non stop last night, I feel on Cloud Nine and I realise that not only have I not had this amount of sleep since my op, I have not had that amount of sleep for years, I always woke üp and first ache was always my hip.  Hip pain was gone from the op and now I have a knee which feels bendy, no tightness, a wee bit achey, but that's from yesterday and will go in days.  I am having a cuppa and a wee biccie then going to have ibuprofen, not to take anything stronger, then start my exercises.  Feeling so positive for a change.

my surgeon and añaesthetist were joking with me before and after the manoeuvre but after their faces were beaming and Mr Wikton said that he had to work on it a lot more than anticipated but he is very very happy with the result he got.  The old scar tissue was definitely part of the problem.  The anaethetist came to see me as he went off duty, big beaming smile and a thumbs up.

I feel like one lucky lady and can only say to everyone if you should get in my situation, the earlier you do it the easier it will be.  Take the offer if given the chance.

Again I can only thank many of you on here for giving me the confidence to go through with it and I will Kerr you posted on my progress.

im Scottish and feel like having a wee jig, feeling so good.  Mr Wilton did not want me to use some exercise machine suggested by the bully Physio on the ward but to do these myself using my own muscles.  This I am definitely doing.

i do hope all goes well for everyone and even if in the next few months I felt no pain and great I will keep coming here to help others as you have done for me.

God bless you all, whatever religion you might be.

Really pleased to hear that you had such a good night...and how much more positive you feel today.  It's like being let out of a box when you can bend and straighten again...and the future starts now.

Work hard, and keep in touch.

Dear Liz, This is awesome news and I am so happy to hear that you slept well. Getting a good night's sleep does a lot for you well being. Based on what you've said, I don't think I'd be so scared to have it done now. Please keep us all informed on your progress! Celebrate the new knee! xo

I feel like I've been kicked by an elephant on my thigh so think they did work hard but I think this pain will only last a few days.  Have to work hard to work through the pain, but I am pushing so that I get a 100 degree bend roughly.  Arnica cream being rubbed on regularly.  Morphine has obviously worn off but only need ibuprofen x

It's so great hearing of something so positive. The manual manipulation under anesthesia made a 100% difference to me when I had it done. It's encouraging to know that there will be progress now. You were stuck in one place with the adhesions and scar tissue holding you back. Easy does it though. Keep it iced, especially after physical therapy and take the pain medicine before having a therapy session. Take it the next day too, you'll need it because you're going to be working vigorously now. Glad to hear you had success!

      Hi Everyone

Bad time of year this as I have been up and down England a couple of times, driving has been easy as the car is automatic.

Pain has definitely set in again but it is different from before as I can still get the increased bend.  I really have to work through the pain, but am very determined as I do not want to go backwards.  Icing it, but I am not a my own home so it is not easy.  I fly back home on 2nd January and it can't come soon enough.  I am making an appointment also to see a very good Physiotherapist.  I think this is the best idea.

It has now been 8 weeks since my operation and I really hope I am on the mend, but sleep is once again difficult.  Went out shopping with my daughter but again it is a struggle so I took many a rest and in fact in the Nike shop I actually did some of my exercises whilst sitting on the bench.

i hope everyone has a lovely Christmas and it would be great if we could all be free of pain.

Hi Liz you really are pushing yourself. Doing all that driving so soon!  But brave.  What you have to remember is that although you have an automatic car, it is still hard driving.  There is so much vibration going on and your poor knee is picking up every single minuscule bump. Do you have any idea how many there are per square inch, and you are doing miles.  I used to drive down to Cornwall a lot and had to keep a pair of crutches in the car as by the time I got down there, I could barely walk.  Eventually a sports physio sat me in the drivers seat and then adjusted the seat to the best position. Felt a bit weird to start with, but it worked.  When I'm really behaving myself I take  few stops on the way. Also have you tried heat instead of ice?  If you have a cruise control button, use it and take your foot of the pedal and then stretch your legs as much as you can and where you can tense your knee.  It can make a lot of difference on long journeys. Please don't be hard on yourself , you are pushing too much, even though you don't have a choice. Also try to stretch your leg as much as you can.  Good luck x

Hired the car so a lot Bigger and more comfortable than my own but very little driving to be done now, thank goodness.  Unfortunately I thought I would be one of the many who sail through this, didn't work out that way and being Christmas it is busy.  Going home to rest and take it easy except for exercise and physio xx

I think I will be doing quite a bit of preparation but I can sit and do some of that.  I think I will let them run after me on the actual day after all my three children are adults now, my turn this year for a bit of pampering.

merry Christmas to you Sue Isobel.
