7K at 7 weeks post op THR

I ran 7k on Wednesday at 7weeks post op. and as advised previously tentatively running since week 4 again . Although I have made great progress and really pleased I didn't realise how much fitness and stamina I have lost after the surgery. That 7k felt like the longest run I had ever done and felt like I had just started running again and was exhausted after . No issues pain wise just tired .

hi. agree re stamina. this op definitely knocks it out of you . atm I'm tending to do 2-3 shortish walks a day and that's working for me and I track and log distance and time plus how I'm feeling. probably ott but it helps me to look back and see how I've progressed.

but gt news re your 7k .have you had your first post OP appt yet ??

yes had my follow up 6 week app with my surgeon and he had no issues at all which was good. He knew I had started back to work etc and running with no concerns . He did say i would be tired but it will come back . Here's hoping as I'm around 20 seconds away from my normal 1k pace times .

Congratulations Keith, but maybe you are forgetting you have been through major surgery, it is not unusual to still be suffering from fatigue after 3 months. I was clearly warned to probably expect this, so not surprised you were exhausted. Pleased you achieved what you wished though! 😃

I had the same thing happen to me after my THR. I had tons of tests and scans but nothing ever showed. I had to go to a nerve specialists and a pain management center. They tried shots and pills but nothing worked. I got so bad that i had to use my wheelchair and walker that i still had from the accident that caused this all. I was even looking into surgeons that would remove my leg at hip. Yes, the pain was that bad and i had went through a ton previously from car accident. Then my ortho said we could do one last surgery to see if anything showed up. He gave me an 80% chance that nothing would be there and this would be my life. Sure enough, there was something there! The ball was loose in the cup and there metal shavings all inside. They had no idea how it didnt show on my x-rays or scans. He also said that he didnt know how i went for so long because that would have been a ton of pain. Soooooo, maybe you need the same. Can you walk? Or is it too painful to put weight on your leg?

that's amazing well done you I'm still trying to walk normal, after 9 wks. I was advised never to run again,

keep up the excercises and dogged determination . Being told you can never run again would be a bummer and from the start my surgeon always said I could run again . I'm 52 and not over the hill . what type of prosthesis did you get

      Hi Margy70,

I am surprised you are still taking painkillers, normally exercising is the best pain relief. I had zero pain after hip op, maybe, not walking as much will help your pain. I walked 30 - 40 minutes a day as I was determined not to damage my hip.

I am so glad I had mine done also and could not comprehend not going ahead. We do heal differently and I was off my cocodamol by about day 10 but to be honest kept taking it as I thought I was going to be in pain but wasn't. 3 miles a day isn't unusual or too much so keep the chin up and keep doing the excercises

Hi Margy, it sounds as though you are doing fine. Everyone heals differently, and 9 weeks is early days. Take it easy, it can take up to a year to recover fully, and if you still need pain killers occasionally, take them!

      All the best, Judith
