Hi, I'm new here, I am 44 and had THR on my left hip on Saturday 10th June 2017. By all accounts it went well I was in agony on The Sunday but by Tuesday they had given me a bag of meds and sent me home. Just don't know how I'm doing or what I should be doing, I can do my leg raises and slides in bed and the standing exercises no problem, In fact my hip feels ok. However my left knee! Is crippling me keeping me up at night etc. I wasn't expecting this. Is normal ? Also things like how long will I be using 2 crutches? And how high should I be able to raise my thigh on standing exercise... I'm sure the pain and tenderness in my thigh is normal lol... apart from this and knowing nothing it's all good ??

Hi, You are doing well...I had a LTHR in May 2015, and when I went home my knee was all purple and my knee and ankle were very swollen, looked like I had a knee replacement. My hip had no brusing. Elevate your leg above your heart using stacked pillows and ice the knee area it will feel better soon.....Take care!!

I had Anterior approach, they twist and turn our leg in all positions when dislocating the hip to replace the parts.............wink

Thanks Loral, I guess there will be new aches and pains every day lol. How long do we have to keep these DVT socks on!! They drive me crazy lol 😂

Did you by any chance have the anterior approach?  I had this last October.  For two months I had such unbearable KNEE pain that I could no weight on that leg.  I had previously had a knee replacement and revision.  They evidently ripped tendons, ligaments, and muscles during the manipulation.  After going to PT, I was finally able to put weight on that leg.  But they also twisted my pelvis and my spine, leaving that leg 2 1/2" longer than the other.  It has been nearly 8 months and I have to use a walker, sleep in a recliner, and take Tramadol for pain.  I would never have had this procedure if I had watched the You Tube video of the surgery prior to the surgery.

When I had the knee pain for 2 months, it was very painful.  So don't worry about whining!  Good luck to YOU.

What an awful experience for you. Surely such damage is not normal with this procedure?

    Dear Johnny

You should expect the possibility of associated pain if only because usually you are pulled around an banged about during the surgery. Do make sure that you take enough pain meds to keel yourself ahead of the pain. If you do this your body will mend more quickly and you will feel more able to do your exercises.

      Hi Richard,

I have some paracetamol and some naproxen, but that's it. If needed should I ask the Hospital for a repeat prescription? I feel I was packed up and sent away with very little info, we spent the last week finding a chair suitable for me to sit in lol.

      Dear Johnny

I needed morphine for a couple of days along with paracetamol but then was thrown onto the floor of the passenger ambulance taking me home and was additionally bruised and needed the morphine for an additional week!

      Cheers Richard

    dear johnygail,

warm welcome to this hippie forum where we share our personal stories and experiences ...

So interesting how we are just tossed out with hardly any information about after care - well, not true, there was some on the pamphlet I received when they told I needed hip replacement surgery - it didn't mean anything to me at that time ...

Apparently a phyical therapist saw you and told you to do those exercises, right?

You just had major invasive surgery where muscles and tendons were severed, bone was cut, joint forcefully dislocated - spaces prepared to have hardware placed ... if you are up to it, have a look at the live  surgery on youtube -

warning: not for the weak of stomach -

Your body needs time to heal and repair the damage - allow it to do so ... exercise (in bed) to keep the blood flowing and standing ones gently - stop when you are in pain ... you can increase when you are ready -

    do you have physical therapy?
