2 weeks after my op I thought I would treat myself to a "Luxury Leather Reclining Massage Chair" from Mailshop (Daily Mail online shop). Well it finally arrived last Friday by which time I was feeling really good about my new hip. It was a day over 3 weeks then and I was walking a bit round the house pain free and without crutches.

Yipee! the chair arrived and I got it all made up by a friend and the first time I used the chair on Friday afternoon it was really comfortable.

On Saturday again sitting in my consevatory reading(after morning exercises of course) and thinking wow this is the way to get over a hip op. Well it was time for a cuppa and thats when everything changed for me. I went to get out of the chair and there was a loud crack, was it my hip going? no it was one of the legs of the chair breaking in two making the seat tilt sharply forward and depositing me on the deck on my hip op wound. OUCH! The pain shot through me and I thought I had the dreaded dislocation. Couldnt get of the floor at first and had to get up by sliding setee cushions underneath one by one until high enough for the wife to pull me up.We did have a giggle about it.

Although the pain not now as bad as I thought it was going to be it is back to where I was a couple of weeks ago.

When I cotacted the Mail they said they had other chairs go like this but in each case it was the fault of the buyer because they tightened up the bolts too much. I dont belieeeeve it

Rest assured the saga will continue but in the meantime my advice would be DONT BUY ONE OF THESE CHAIRS

How awful!! Was it yesterday? Do you think you need

    your hip checking?

I think you were amazing to keep your sense of humour

    after that happening.

I wish you a problem-free recovery from now on.

How terrible - shame on theDaily Mail.

I must say I love my recliner.  The NHS was unable to provide a raiser for it, so I made up a wooden box to fit the metal framework so that it is now 6 inches higher for me.

Hope you have not done any lasting damage and at least get your money back.

good lord, Colin. ..what a scary experience. ...this shouldn't happen and I would definitely make a complaint ..it could have been much worse. ..

let me know how you're getting on, okay?

    Big warm hug

I think more than just a complaint is needed. This chair was clearly faulty, not fit for purpose and you suffered actual injury and pain because of it. I don't know whether the person selling you faulty equipment or the maker is responsible in law. My own feeling is that the Mail should not have been selling something they knew to be faulty, I suggest you contact the your local Trading Standards Officer or the Citizens' Advice Bureau with a view to making a compensation claim.

It's good that you can see the funny side, But think if it had been someone less able perhaps living alone, maybe lying on the floor for hours...

Thanks for your suggestions and I think I will take up the TSO suggestion. Have spoken with the customer services director of the marketing company who trade as mail shop and they won't even pay for the dismantling and packing of the chair to be returned.

Not going to drop this as you are right it could happen to someone less able to cope
