Acid reflux again

Hi ladies

Months ago I suffered with acid reflux. I went on Lansaparole and it gradually disappeared. However the last 3 weeks I'm sure it's back. I'm nauseous constantly, chest is tight and burping a bit in the day. My stomach looks really big and feels bloated. Because I've been having bouts of constipation then going a lot with nauseous doctor is doing blood tests. I think I probably have IBS and acid reflux. Has anyone gone on certain diet that works?

So sorry to hear about your troubles - I'm following this discussion because I'm going through something similar.  Tightness in my chest, bloating, lots of burping and flatulence throughout the day but I also have many bowel movements per day.  It wasn't acidic (or I didn't notice) until yesterday that I vomited a bit and I noticed that perhaps there is some acid involved.  Someone else on the boards suggested bland foods, stay away from dairy, coffee, chocolate, tomato, gluten.  Don't eat for a few hours before bedtime.  I personally get gas pains and have relieved  a lot of that by walking and massages which push out the gas.  Either way, I've got an appointment with my doctor for the end of the month.  I hope some of this helps you.  Feel free to message me.  I've been messaging with some people who have been so very kind to me.  I'd love to pay it forward. I went through this, it does pass. Another pesky symptom I am afraid.

Hi, Michelle, sorry you're going through this.  You could try the Fodmap diet, you can find it on line.  Also, eating small, frequent meals. Avoid orange and grapefruit juice, and soft drinks, as they are highly acidic.

Best of luck to you.  Hoping you feel better soon!

    Hi Michelle,

i suffer fer terribly from this.  I found that eliminating processed foods, wheat , fried foods, dairy and spicy foods has really helped.  I also suffer from IBS and the thing that really works for me is the gluten elimination.  Had GI testing done that showed chronic gastritis and testing shows non celiac gluten sensitivity.   Went on pantoprazole for 10 weeks and now take ranitidine 150mg twice a day.  Chocolate is a big no no.  It has an ingredient in it that relaxes the sphincter that connects your stomach and esophagus, causing reflux.

i do find that these symptoms seem to come and go, even with meds...I think as hormones fluctuate so do the symptoms.  My GI doc also agrees with this.

    Hopes this helps!

Oh...I also get the chest tightness with it...sometimes lasting for days.  That's the worst part for me because then I worry about cardiac.  It got so bad I ended up having cardiac CT scan with dye which thankfully showed zero blockages in cardiac arteries!

Thanks so much for your reply. I read last night on this forum that people who have had their gallbladder out are very prone to bile and acid reflux. They have been suffering terribly. I had my gallbladder out 2 years ago now I'm thinking that is part of the problem. I'm a bit annoyed because the specialist didn't really give me an option. I also have IBS like you. I'm going to start eating differently today. I really hope this nauseous and bloated feeling starts to ease x

    Hi Michelle!

Sorry you're suffering. reflux is just awful. As you know I have several bowel/digestive conditions. I had an upper endoscopy a few years ago as i was getting nightime reflux whilst asleep that would wake me choking on awful tasting reflux that burnt my throat & made me cough ridiculously. i would also be bloated & burped alot. the endoscopy found oesophaghits caused by the reflux & put me on initially omeprazole. this didnt help so they then put me on esomeprazole 40mg day for 8wks to heal the oesophagus & control reflux. once the 8wks had passed i reduced to 20mg & continue to take it to this day & it controls my nightime reflux very well most of the time. i no longer get excessive burping, but still get regular bloating due to my other conditions. i forgot to pack them once when i went on holiday & i had terrible reflux after missing just 2 days of doses, but luckily was able to buy some nexium which is 10mg over the counter to tide me over til i got home. so i do need them everyday.

I do find the following foods will still bring on nightime reflux even on the esomeprazole & are best avoided: onions, particularly spicy sauces, tomatoes, any fruit juices, chocolate if eaten in the evening, fried or greasy food, pickle.

Because of my other bowel conditions i struggle to eat hardly any veg as i can't digest them properly, & fruit is a nono as i have fructose malabsorption. i have to follow a low residue diet which i don't think would help you as you have the opposite problem to me( i have diarrea, you have constipation), but as Lynda suggested , the low fodmap diet may help you. (it didnt help me as many of the foods on there i can't digest properly or they exacerbate my diarrea).

Also anything i would've fried years ago, i now cook in the oven on a baking tray with disposable foil. even sausages or burgers come out fine. if you have sausages or burgers like we do once a fortnight, i usually buy the high meat content ones as they have less fat in them & taste much better.

I have read on here that reflux can go with peri too......it may be worth asking your doc if you can increase the lansaparole & see if that helps, or switch to another ppi (like I'm on esomeprazole - another ppi).

Also, when you get a "burst" of reflux, i find a glass of milk really helps to soothe my throat & stomach. milk is a natural acid neutralizer too.

Hope this helps a bit hun.

    xx
