Hey,

I've been suffering from acid reflux quite badly now for a few months, I've been to the doctors so many times but nothing seems to be helping. I have good days where I feel fit and well and then other days I struggle with burping and sickness really bad and nothing seems to ease. I'm only 21 and this is slowly starting to take over my life, the doctor has said that my acid reflux is due to stress as I have a busy lifestyle, working university and my daughter. I'm just at a point now where I don't know what to do. Can anybody help?

I would recommend a low fat, low salt, low acid diet, avoiding anything irritating, and sleeping on a wedge.

Have you been tested for H.Pylori?

Yeah I've had blood tests and stool samples taken and everything keeps coming back clear which is a good sign I guess. It's just the feeling sick that's getting to me. I take 20mg of omeprazole daily but sometimes I don't feel asif it works

My tests were pretty good too except for the mild gastritis. Honestly I tried all supplements there is out there, and the only thing that really works is a strict low fat, low salt, low acid diet to not irritate the stomach, it must be done for a long time (a few months). You  might even be able to get of omeprazole at some point.

I have had this a few months now.  What I've concluded after trying every suggestion out there including those from gastro specialists is, that this is not curable.  Try all the PPIs and see which works best for you, ie, Nexium, TECTA, etc.  The right med will make the condition liveable.  Then slowly try the classic suggestions to see if any improve your situation, ie, raising the head of the bed, eliminating fats from your diet, abstaining from alcohol and smoking.  Finally, slowly introduce the naturopath suggestions like, slippery elm, aloe liquid, etc.  There is a wealth of information on the web.....research, gain knowledge and take control.

Have you had a pepsin test? ... an Endoscopy? ... in order that you might know what the specific trouble is?  That would, I think, be most prudent.  If you have an excess of mucus I would suggest a round of Gaviscon Advance.  For me it took care of the mucus problem fairly rapidly ... also the slightly acidic taste in the mouth.  Agree with the dietary advice.

Good points....important to rule out other causes like sinus infections, allergies, asthma, etc.  Endoscopist should also be checking on possible hiatal hernia.  Thanks for the Gaviscon Advance suggestion.

Forget about the antacids they will make you worse after an initial improvement. Try a good quality digestive enzyme that has betaine hcl in it. Your body isn't digesting the food correctly and as a result it will be gassing off in the bowel. The digestive enzymes will help correct the situation. You will probably only need to take them for a few weeks. Take them as you start a meal. You should see an improvement immediately.

Hi yasmin, have alot of experience of this it's probably the omeprazole that is giving you that sickness / neusea feeling I had that for ages until I came of it. Also the mind can play tricks on you and make you worse just read any book by freud, so you need to stop getting so stressed out and stop worrying about things don't let it take over your life. Here is what to do, first of all get of omeprazole and don't try any other ppi it won't be easy at first because you will get a back lash of acid reflux but don't worry thats normal. Then go to doctors and ask for a lower dose of omeprazole 10mg backed up by a couple of bottles of peptac peppermint liquid which is basically gaviscon but you can get this on prescription so cheaper;-) now this stuff is good like seaweed and a natural substance because it protects the throat and stomach lining but does not stop your body from naturally producing acid which is very important for digesting food and killing all the little bugs which have probably been getting worse since the ppi's and making you feel ill! So try this until your finally of them altogether! And finally and most important thing the mind can be your worst enemy sometimes so stop worrying about it live your life and the body will take care of itself! good luck.

      Agreed about the stressing stevieg5.

Can you say more about the seaweed you mention? Is there a particular way you eat it, or just combined within your diet/meals? thanks.

Thanks for all the advice guys, I haven't had a pepsin test or an Endoscopy. I'm back at the doctors Wednesday so thinking of asking for the tests just to rule anything else out. It all started for me after I got the flu in January then ever since then I've never really seemed to get 100% better after. Once the feeling sick comes I do think I start to worry to much about it and I shouldn't, I'm going to look into the diets to help coz I wouldn't say we eat healthy every night but who does the only thing that gets to me aswell is the feeling that you can't just eat anything anymore coz I'm not going to lie I love food smile suppose it's just about training my body and finding what helps and what doesn't

Hi Yasmin, That's the spirit!  Just remember that the NHS (if you have private cover this may be different) does not support the Pepsin test as of yet.  I am not sure for the reasons for this.  You would have to get this yourself.  If you google 'peptest' you will find a range of companies offering the service.  I did mine with a company called rdbiomed which I found courtesy of this site.  It can cost as little as £50.  It will be money well spent as if you are negative then at least you know you are not dealing with LPR ... or the reverse.
