Acid Reflux - Diet

Posted , 11 users are following.

I had anothother bad nights sleep last night even though i took my medication before i went to bed at mid night.

At about 6pm I had my last meal which was Ham off the bone new potatoes andbaked beans.I later had a cup of tea and later still some Wine Gums as a sweet treat.

So in your experience I am i correct in assuming that it was the ham that caused my problem rather than the other things I ate.

By whatI have read I think I am lucky in what problems I am having compared to many of yourselves but it seems to me that as time is going on my illness is getting worse.

I am currently taking Lanso.. and Rini... but given the advise I have received on here I am going to ween myself off of both of them.

Keep well everyone. Ted

Probably ham is not a good idea for a last meal of the day. My diet has been stable for the past 3 years, been very good for me. In the morning I would have a liquid meal such as protien shake, in the afternoon I'd have baked chicken and pasta or rice with vegitables, the last meal of the day would be oat meal with whey protien and hot milk. Oats are known to be easy on the stomach, it also absorbs cholestrol so it's healthy for the heart. If baked chicken doesn't suit you try boiled chicken without spices.

The only thing I'd query is milk. Compounded by sugar

Fat free milk. Suger is better than salty meal. Also milk helps in sleep. Best to eat 4 hours before sleeping, so when you sleep almost on an empty stomach.

Thanks Gillian I am trying to limit the amount of milk I drink and when I do its only in tea and on my morning cereal.

I don't use sugar other than any in the sweets I eat.

At 5' 10" and 15 st I definitely need to lose some weight as well because I understand that doesnt help either.

      Thank you for replying

    Hi Ted,

It could be the sweets maybe?  However, I am been told that things like liquorice allsorts and jelly babies are supposed to be ok?  I am still on mainly a liquid diet and have the odd treat of a boiled sweet now and then!  I am awaiting an appointment for a barium swallow so hopeing to find out what is going on after that test!  I still have a lump in my throat feeling even though I am not eating anything bad at the moment and its a nightmare, not being able to socialise or anything at the moment.  I have recently changed from Omeprazole to Lansoprazole medication and its not making much different at the moment, I am just trying to monitor how I feel each day to try and get to the bottom of it all!  Once I am feeling better I will ween myself of the meds too!

    Take care, Amanda.

Sweets are never a good idea. The idea is to loose fat around the stomach area and increase overall lean body mass, muscles can helps reduce acidity and use up fat, the main reason of refulx is weakness of the muscles that shut off the esophagus.

I am too having a lump feeling, I notice it comes when I sit up right, which pushed the stomach upward, so I always sit in a reclining positon, making sure the spine is straight, no hunching.

You'd also want to stay away from tea and coffee, caffine can increase acidity. I can't function without caffine so I have some only when I need it.

Thanks again Samuelson I will try and cut down on the sweets and tea as you advise to but this illness is proving to be a real pain as I like a cup of tea and a sweet being a non drinker.

However having said that I do realise that I could have an illness that is a lot worse so I should not be moaning really.

Still if I do at least cut down on the sweets my cycling and running will hopefully be made a lot easier. Regards Ted

Hi Ted, Just to tell you that, a few weeks ago, I ate some jelly type sweets in the evening - and it started a night of very bad pain.  I have just read your comments and it reminded me.  Who knows??  There are so many thinks that start a bad reaction but I will definitely not be eating them EVER AGAIN.
