Acid reflux - so painful in the chest - is this really just reflux!

Okay, so here are the facts: I have a 1 cm hiatel hernia and reflux. This I have been diagnosed with.  I changed my whole diet  - very bland and eating next to nothing. For about a week or two I was feeling better and eating all the same foods. However, last night I ate the same meal I eat every night -my chicken and applesause at 5:00. At 8:00 the intense pains started in the chest and went on and off until 1:00am with feeling like I was having a heart attack. Pains in the back and chest and under my breastbones. Finally took my spasm meds (docs thought I was having espog. spasms) but that didn't work to help the pain. Any thoughts - does anyone experience this horrible chest pain. It is horribly painful feeling like my esophagus is being pulled, stabbed, and crushed. Its excrucaiting! Any suggestions???

Hi Dane I don't know if I can be helpful but I've been feeling too a terrible pain in my chest with horrible heartburn that lasts hours. I know my esophagus and throat are suffering the effects of constant acid reflux. I would suggest that you seek medical help from a specialist if those pains return, it can be something more serious but with possible treatment. I am very concerned about the AR but I cannot understand why is it happening. I don't have an hernia or any other stomach problems except gallbladder surgery few weeks ago and that's when this nightmare started.

Hope you can feel much better in future

Sounds like trapped wind to me,not reflux

A doctor told me to take a teaspoon of bicarbonate of soda in a glass of water and if wind did not come up to relieve the chest pain to call emergency as it might be a heart attack. Yourslike mine has gone on so long it is not likely to be cardiac related but the bicard may bring up the wind. A can of Coke type drink is just as good.

Thanks derek, I had my heart checked with tons of tests and is just fine. So what is bicarbonate? Any kind of soda or a special kind of soda?

      Just Google bicarbonate of soda.

Any type os soda is fizzy and brings up wind.

I feel the same. I hurt right in the middle of my stomach. I have had bad chest pains for about a week. I also have terrible anxiety and kidney stones! I'm a big mess!! So when I hurt, it could be a lot of things. This GERD or whatever it is is very painful. I have the choking in the esophagus, along with bad stomach pains.  It is very scary. I am taking an off brand of previsid 30 minutes before meals. Don't really see a difference   I have been uncomfortable for a while now.  No chest pains at this time but a little pain in shoulder. I don't want to go through tests!! Any solutions? I am not over weight and I do have heart burn some but not a lot. I've been told it could also be hormones. Suggestions???

pamela , I am so sorry to hear what your going through. I cannot understand any of this and it just happened out of the blue. I eat dinner around 5 every night and then around 8 or 9 the chest pains begin and sometimes they will last all night. I do have reflux and also anxiety. I often wonder if I am having anxiety attacks but I can feel the food stuck in my chest. It is pretty much a nightmare becuase now I am afaid to eat anything cuz it happens with non acid foods as well. Good luck to you and keep in touch with your posts. Thinking of you and hope you will get well.

    Hi Dane,

I can't eat apples with my reflux - just a thought! If I eat the wrong foods now I know straight away - my throat goes tight, my nose starts to run - and if I have really overdone it I start retching. I'm afraid you need to note down when you get bad reactions from food - and then avoid them. I now had a list as long as my arm literally!
