Advice needed again please :-)

Hello everyone, just in need of some more advice. Was diagnosed with hsv2 5 weeks ago now and have had constant out breaks until yesterday when finally I woke up feeling pretty normal. Honestly it was an amazing feeling after such a long time of hsv attacking me :-) but it just so happened that last night I took my last acyclovir tablet from my 5 day course. My doctor has given me about 60 tablets so I've got some for future outbreaks. I'm just wondering if even though I'm pretty much recovered, I should carry on taking the tablets maybe just twice a day to help keep outbreaks away and to give me a bit of a rest? It has been the worst time in my life :-( or should I just see how I go and hope for the best? Thanks x

If I were you I would take suppressive therapy. I found out 5 weeks ago as well and have been on it since and I haven't had a second outbreak.

Thanks, I think that's what I will do to be on the safe side :-)

You're single, so no transmission issues, in which case it's entirely up to you. I don't take the meds, not even for recurrences, as I'm also single and my recurrences generally don't bother me too much. I'd rather stay off the meds and only take them regularly when I need to (e.g., ro reduce transmission, or if my outbreaks were to become worse). When there's no discordant partner to worry about, suppressive therapy is a personal choice.

Yeah I see your point too actually. It's just so nice to feel back to normal pretty much again :-) I'll see how I go and just enjoy it while it lasts lol x

The compromise is episodic therapy, whereby you only treat recurrences as and when they arise. That way, you can still observe your natural recurrence rate without the bother of an actual outbreak (or at least not a full one) or daily meds. The difficulty is knowing when you are about to have a recurrence, as it's not always very obvious, but it's a good way to try and learn the signs. I haven't done episodic therapy myself, primarily because I don't get obvious warning signs (think I can sort of tell now) and figured I'd just see what happens if I do nothing, lol.

I would encourage suppressive therapy for sure smile I've been on it since my first outbreak and havent had one since. Plus it reduces transmission
