Advice would be appreciated

Am awaiting TKR and it looks like I will have waited 12 months on NHS before it gets done. My problem is my other knee is giving me more pain now, I think because I am trying to keep the weight off my other leg. It is worst at night in bed with calf pain, soreness of knee and thigh pain. When walking it is my instep, side of the foot and ankle are aching.

Any advice, tips would be most appreciated before this leg goes like the other.

I guess it depends on the hospital and their capacity. I was fortunate to see the consultant within 2 weeks of the referral and as I was happy (ish) to be added to the cancellation program, was called later that week on the Friday morning (whilst travelling for a long weekend away) and offered the following Monday. I had to decline as just too short notice, but was back in for the procedure 4 weeks later. A surgeon not operating for a hour or two is expensive, so they are keen to slot you in..

tractorman - Sorry to hear you dont have the same choices north of the border. I would make a few calls to NHS Scotland and England, rather than wait for officialdom to shuffle your paperwork around. Good luck..

And all the best for January Laura..

Slow down all of your movement. Make sure you are striding using the heel, ball of the foot, toe and full bend and do this with both legs. Stand up straight when moving. When getting up from a chair, scoot your butt as close to the front of the chair as possible forming a Z with your body, then push up with both legs. This will help relieve some of the pressure when getting up. Get a cane and put it in the hand opposite the leg that will be operated on. Use ice packs on both knees to hold down swelling and if they don't bother your stomach, use anti inflammatories for pain relief.

Thanks Oldfatguy will try these tips. Am using a stick, but have now got another one as need to get weight off this leg. Night time in bed is worst and only sleep for 2 hours and am shattered. Using full strength Tramadol at night which helps a little. No real swelling in either knee.
