Hey everyone. This is my first time posting. Im new to this whole anxiety thing. A couple months ago i had a panic attack thinking something was physically wrong with me because of a chest pain and ever since then my anxiety has been stuck with me. Some weeks I feel like im getting back to normal and some weeks i feel like im losing my mind. I got prescribed 10mg Citalopram about a month ago and these past two weeks have been horrible. Escpecially this week. Im having weird and unwanted thoughts that increase my anxiety. Dumb thoughts like, what if everything around me isnt real? I have alot of what if thoughts and it scares me and increases my anxiety. Are these thoughts normal?? Just looking for some comfort here haha

Hi Chris, those "what if" thoughts are typical of anxiety. They are exactly the thoughts that cause your mind to race and you feel like you're unable to turn them off in your head. The feeling of unreality is also another product of increased anxious thinking. Because you are still in the acute phase of taking the 10mg,your anxiety is being heightened by the Citalopram making everything seem worse. This is normal for everyone as you will see if you read other people's posts. Any and everything you experience will be heightened anxiety,so don't panic, just accept it for what is and it's gonna be like that,up and down, for a good while. You are on a very low dose and you may still have to increase to 20mg which is the minimum therapeutic dosage, but that's up to you and your Dr. Good luck.
