Almost at 4 weeks post op and just got to 75 % ROM in outpatient therapy

Hi all, i am 3 weeks and 3 days post op and started out patient therapy this past Monday and was 60 % ROM now today friday at 75%  , just feel that most people at almost 4 weeks pre op are at 90 or more so I feel so behind compared to others, still have a good amount of swelling and ice about 8 hours a day. I am petrified that they are going to bring up MUA and i am working hard everyday to improve, any thoughts or advice would be appreciated .

Dont worry everyone improves at thier own rate i couldnt even lift my leg at 7 weeks still struggling now at 12 weeks at 6 weeks I only had 65 % bend at 12 weeks my knee is really tight and stiff but honestly i was like you worried I even was in tears at physio when I seen older people doing more than what I could but my lovely physio lady was excellent she explained it like having a baby no pregnancy is the same we are all different and not to compare with others you will get there x

Don't worry , 75% is better than some and not as good as others . Every recovery is different . Don't compare your recovery with that of others . Everyone is different , even the same person will probably  find a great difference in recovery of two knee replacements .  My first knee no problems , with the other my leg was black from foot to thigh , but it was ok in the end . Keep up your physio and exercises but don't over do it . Take your medication to control your pain . 19½ and 17½ years since my ops and I have had no problems .

Hi I'm 10 weeks post left TKR and I've always had problems with ROM at 3 weeks I as only 60 degrees and since 5 weeks I've been stuck at 85 to 90 degrees. Different people get different measurements using a goniometer they're not the easiest thing to use to get an accurate reading. I now gauge my bend by sticking some tape on the floor and drawing a line on the tape where my foot is. I know for a fact my bend has improved yet yesterday I went to a physio session and he measured it at 85 degrees!! I'm just carrying on doing my exercises and not trying to worry too much about figures. I see my consultant again on the 4th January and he will make a decision then whether to do MUA. Personal question what age group are you in?

I am 48 and a keen cyclist before the operation. Since coming on this forum it seems to be people younger than 60 that have a problem with flexion. Whether it's anything to do with our muscles or the speed in which we heal I have no idea but it seems to be a common theme. I do my exercises regular particularly stretches to try and improve ROM but you don't seem to get rewarded for the effort you put in. Last week though I noticed a difference in my ability to do certain things ( walking up stairs, getting my feet on my foot pegs on my motorbike) even though my measurement was the same.

Ps I love tennis not been able to play for years due to osteoarthritis when I was a child I wanted to be like Virginia Wade x

That's very interesting.... you know things are improving... what a difference that makes!

My PT said that they have found younger people do take longer to heal. It’s to be expected than someone older. Don’t feel bad Marie I am a slow healer too have been in PT since surgery in August! I am making progress but it’s taking a long time. I concentrate more fervently now on heel slides and it’s making a difference. Don’t feel bad or discouraged just get on with it smile you will be alright

Try not to be anxious. We are all very different. Swelling restricts bending. It's a mixture of rest as well as working on the motion. Are you in UK?

I’m 50 & I was a little like you at that stage, but gradually have increased ROM. By 7 weeks I was at 85, dreaded seeing my consultant as didn’t want an MUA. Luckily for me he didn’t want me to have one either!  However, others on this forum have and as far as I can make out, a lot of pain for little gain, so I have plodded on and last measure at 10 weeks was 100!  So pleased that I didn’t have MUA now. It’s hard work but I’m getting there!  Good luck to you.

Morning, well its is here in the UK! I am 7 weeks post TKR and also had a kneecap replacement ( don't know if that makes a difference?) At physio Thursday I was 90 degrees and finished at 100 with a lot of pressure from my PT. I still cannot straighten my leg and therefore cannot do lift raises. I am about 5 away. I saw my consultant at 6 weeks and he said it was still early days and not to worry. No mention of a possible MUA.....YET...!   I am 57 and was very very active and supple before and I too am rather concerned when the "oldies" seem to be doing better than me without the same effort! However, I know that compared to some others on this forum I am doing well. I now have my leg resting on a stool with an oven glove with weights in totalling 3kg in an effort to straighten leg. I walk on my treadmill as I find it hard to walk properly and maintain a correct rythym. Not without crutches when out! I have a cryo cuff and have used this from day one. I have also hired a compex tens like machine for a month at a cost of £100 to help stimulate my quad muscles..

Have done the depressive bit too....or still am....didn't help that they took me off my HRT 2 weeks before op and am not allowed to go back on it yet. I'm hoping that people on here similar to me can give me so positive stories to keep me going. But yes at 3 weeks certainly don't worry!
