Am I doing to much - 4 days post op

Hi all new here and hope I'm posting in the right place. I had a pelvic floor repair last Thursday due to posterior prolapse. I got home on Saterday evening and feel surprisingly ok - have reduced the painkillers and been very mobile in and out of the house - although making sure not to lift or strain anything- am also doing my pelvic floor excercises 4 times a day - bowels starting moving yesterday but am worried that I am doing too much and it's going to come back and bite me- I was pretty active before the op but certainly not super fit - but am finding it hard not to be reasonably active if I'm not in pain - would be great to hear some words of wisdom  from some of you that are a bit further on in their recovery

    Hi Deborah

I really think you need to put your feet up as you may well undo the op you've had done .?i read lots on here about ladies that overdo it and have a set back. You may feel ok but you have interior stitches that need to heal and that takes time! Put your feet up and be waited on for a change!

    Xx

Agree with Rosiepix ! It's much harder actually if you are finding the recovery easy as the temptation to do lots is very hard to ignore but you must.

If you had stitched incisions across your stomach would you be doing as much even if you were relatively pain free !? The answer is probably no ! It's so hard when we can't see why we are being told to rest and not do anything if you feel good but those incisions need time to heal before you get too mobile and your body needs time to rest. Enjoy a little time putting your feet up ! Catch up on some books or films xx

    Hi,

I am 2 weeks post op on wed... I too reduced my painkillers, mainly because I know I will overdo thinks and the only way I know I've overdone it is when I suffer the pain and discomfort that warns me that I have just done that. They usually tell us not to do anything for weeks as most of the repair takes that time to knit together, and even though we feel fine it still takes time deep inside. This is my 2nd repair and I often wonder if I was to quick on my feet 1st time round. Like you I was pretty fit :

Regular ar gym, swimmer and cycling, 5 kids (3 still at home), and on my feet at work. So intend to try take it easy this time, it is really hard when you feel fine but one of the other ladies on this site said she followed advise and did nothing for 2 weeks and took it slowly building up to 12 weeks and has had no problems , so I'm being more carefully this time!

Sounds like thinks are going well and hope you continue to have a speedy recovery.

Thanks ladies you have just confirmed what I think I knew deep down- I waited a long time to get this procedure I'm only in my early 40s so don't want to be going through all this again in a few years time- am going to really try to stay off my feet a bit more - think I was really worried that I would feel much worse than this so it was a pleasant surprise to feel pretty ok and think i have got a bit carried away by that ( also really didn't want to fall into the "victim" mentality as I do have a tendency to have quite low moods from time to time) am lucky that I have v supportive partner too so should really be making the most of that ... Thank for your responses no doubt I'll have more questions as the weeks progress ...

Hi Deborah, yes I think you are. I will be 4 weeks post op this Thursday and I too felt great in the first 10  days so did some garden work and even some work work that I had to get done - tax man doesn't care if I've had an op!! and then it hit me. Total pain and throbbing down there. I thought I had damaged something and may well have as didn't take my self off to spec just to bed. My spec explained that 2 things lead us to think we are great and that we should be ok doing stuff. One is the anthestic can stay in our system for upto 2 weeks so we don't feel the pain or throbbing even if we reduce the pain killers, secondly it is only when the stitches start to cime away ( like they should) and the wound heals that we notice the discomfort and listen to our bodies as we can feel what our bodies are telling us to do. In the early days our stitches are holding everything in place and providing that extra suppport once they start to come away and with the internal sticthes you can't say when that is really you really need to take it easy. My spec says most of damage - stitches come away too soon  and prolapse failure is often because as women if we think we are invincable - but we aren't so please take the time to lift the weight of your area down there put your feet up and rest , don't sit for too long and gradually increase walking start with smaller walks. You will find that once your body starts to heel , you may become exhausted for no apparemt reason or without warning, well I did and so have alot of other lovely ladies who took the time to reassure me that evrything would be ok when I did iover do it just after the first week. Even this wekend even after all I had read I helped my hubby in the garden, no heavy lifting just on my feet alot and picking stuff up assiting the mastero LOL but the next day i suffered and got a bladder infection to boot as ignored my high temp just put that down to working out in summer heat. But pain when peeing told me otherwise and I realsied I hadn't been drinking enough, so please take mine and the other ladies advice and take it easy , heaven knows when you will get the chance again, unless of course you are unfortunate to need to go through all this surgery and recovery again. God knows I don't want to but will have to wait til I see my spec on April 5th ( if got me in early after I mentoned I was stupid and did some work in first few weeks) till I will know if my op a sucess. So please don't be stupid like me and over do things. My doc said I shouldn't have picked stuff up or stood or sat for long periods till 4-6 weeks. Sorry for lecture and long post but sure wish I had listened and kick myself every time I think yeh I am ok now and then my body regret it the next day. Heavy feeling down there and throbbing if I overdo it, not at time but next day usually. Anyway Good Luck? One last thing , did spec advise you to do kegal? My told me specificvally NOT to as did ask him as had great succss with them before op with bladder control. He advised I could do them after 6 weeks or my check up as in his words ,we don't want to undo my work do we. Sometimes the exercises can pull on the stitches and the wound can tear - just what he advised. I know others who have posted that they have done it and no problems but I figure he is my spec and I will wait and do them at 6 weeks. I did have a huge perineum repair all the way through so that might be why. All the best and please rest up especailly in the first 1-4 weeks. Big hugs x

Fantastic response Tilley. I am laying down most of the time so there is no pressure on my pelvic floor. I intend to do this with bed physio for a full 2 weeks with a few mins walking to keep circulation going. I feel 90% fine and know I could do loads of things but I will then mess up the repair without a doubt. I'm going to be overly cautious after getting a telling off from my partner. It's just not worth it. X

My op was on 11th March. Had TVTO/Anterior & Posterior repairs. I was told no pelvic floor until after six week check.

Not had to take pain killers constantly, but hard to know what level of activity you are able to do, like you just really pottering around house. Hard when your not one for sitting around. I am 62, active and just want to do the right thing so I can get back to my running. Went out for a meal 8 days post op and spent yesterday in bed.

Have a funeral to go to 17 days post op and have to travel down for hour in car. Feel it's important to go, but worried this will set me back.
