Am I harming myself?

It's 3 and a half weeks since my rectocele repair, which I'm pretty sure I needed because I overdid things after a hysterectomy. I was being very good up till 4 days ago: not lifting, not standing or sitting too long, spending most of my time with feet up and going for gradually longer walks. Then my mother, who isn't well, took a turn for the worse. I made the journey to see her by train - 5 hours sitting, uncomfortably, on a train, only occasionally being able to wander round because it was overcrowded. Now I'm here caring for Mum, which means helping her into and out of the shower, dressing her, cooking and doing the washing. I'm not hoovering and dusting, but I'm very busy and spending much of my time exhausted. Am I likely to be doing myself any harm? I can feel the stitches occasionally while walking about, but they aren't too sore - and I did find that I bled after a bm on one occasion.

Is it heavy work, helping her dress etc.? It seems like too much to do that early but sometimes you just have to do the best you can, and it isn't ideal. I do think it's possible to damage your repair (hence the lifting restrictions etc) but I don't know how much it takes to do it.

Thanks for the response. Yes, there really wasn't any choice about making the journey and, now I'm here I can't leave her to struggle. I think I probably need to take care with shopping and washing in particular.

Hello Grable. This was an unfortunate situation and obviously you had no alternative but to go and look after your mum. You are just going to have to rest as much as possible as there's no way of knowing if the prolapse repair is going to be able to cope with lifting. You will probably find though your recovery will take longer because you're not giving your body time to recover emotionally and physically x
