Am I pushing it a bit?

Morning all,

I am nearing my 6wk check up (2/4) and feel I'm doing ok. My husband though thinks I'm pushing on too quickly. I was able to ditch one crutch after a few days home and now walk with just one stick. Sometimes I take a few steps around the home without any aid and he completely freakes out. He says he thinks I should wait to be told if it's ok to be doing this when I see my Consultant in 4 days time.

I feel ok with everything I walk as much as possible and rest when I need to, even go to bed every afternoon for an hour or so.

My husband is really very supportive and I know he worries about me but do you think I'm trying to run before I can walk? I'd love to hear of anyone elses experience. I'm starting to think maybe I am hurting myself without realising it. I have no pain really just a bit of aching and stiffness and just take maybe a couple of paracetamol each day. Scar ok although it is quite long and a bit bumpy, so using the bio oil. Have had a very blue days and been a bit teary, all perfectly normal from reading other posts on here. So hope I'm not overdoing it.

By the way if you're in the UK don't forget the clocks need to go forward an hour!

    Hi

well done, go with how you feel seems to be what others say.

My Mum had hers done last year, but suffers with confidence issues , you don't so go with your feelings

      Thanks Carol,

Yes I am quite confident although have had a few times when I've been scared and reluctant to venture out.

It is a very individual experience of course. I am 57 so relativey young for this op. Loved it when the occupational therapist said I was young and fit haha, not been told that for many a long year!

Saw my consultant on Friday -5 1/2 weeks - he said "keep the crutch for

as long as you want to but I expect you are sometimes walking without it at home! " Seems to be our chant of 'listen to your body's is the way to go

Congratulations.  I would say you are doing okay.  I only used one crutch after 4 weeks, so you are fine.  When I went for my check up, as long as I wasn't limping I was told I could give up the crutches.  I wasn't limping so I gave them up, however she  did say to keep one just for reassurance when I went out, if it was slippy, icy or wet, so I did, but haven't needed it at all.   I think you are progressing well.  Keep up the good work and yes I remembered to alter the clocks!

      Thanks for the reassurance Barbara.

I will probably need an aid outside for sometime yet, think that is a wise thing to do, like you say especially if it's wet plus there are loads of cobbled roads where I live.

I think you are doing well I went for my 6week check with one curch my consultant said I need more confidence to go without them altogether it took me another week only because I dropped it on the floor and coulnt pick it up I haven't used them since and I am now 8weeks . I think you should go by how you feel yourself

    Hi ferretswife

No I dont think you're overdoing it, it sounds like you are doing just fine.

I expect your husband is just worried about you and being a bit over protective, which is lovely.

Sounds like you are listening to your body and what its telling you.

Its when you forget to take your crutch you know you don't necessarily need it.

Though I forgot mine when I went to work on Friday, then realised and came back for it, I only take it for support when I'm out, I don't use it inside only in the morning usually when I first get up as I am stiff. I'm 9 weeks.

Good luck with the rest of your recovery

      Hi Christine,

Well done for getting back to work after just 9 weeks. Don't think I'm quite ready to leave my stick. Only bought it last week a lovely flowery affair.

      Good luck to you too.

Have you ladies considered a fold up stick for when you think your good without one but then come afternoon wish you had one. Pre op I had mixed days where some I would need 2 crutches, some I wouldn't need any. As a safety blanket I kept a purple flowery fold up stick in the bottom of my handbag so that it was there. Plus when we went out for dinner and I was dressed all nice I felt better with a flowery one than with a bright silver hospital one. You can buy them in lots of places, I got mine on Amazon for about £10. A plain one was less but I wanted a flowery girly one. Emma x

      Hi Emma

I had 2 fold up sticks which I used for most of last year before surgery, a pretty pink flowery one but I am finding a crutch more supportive at the moment. I'm hoping that I won't need anything at all once I don't need my crutch.
