Yes...this happens with Amlodipine. Absolutely go back to your dr and tell your side effects. Have him either put you on something else or google natural ways to lower your blood pressure. I would not go off by yourself cold turkey. Some people do and they seem to be ok. But my experience didn't go so well, but I was on it for over 2 years. Best of luck to you!

after being on amlodipine 5 mg twice daily for months they changed the formulation/ appearance (label on package) one foot crazy swelling and cramps, then both ankles like elephants and unable to walk well at all. Took time off work and did the wean thing over a week as was on hols and able to do so. On return went to GP who suggested blood tests for vitamin k levels. Anyway the upshot is I am not on anything at the mo and only feel dreadful when I wake up. Shortness of breath and pounding heart rate. This does go. I have also added walking, and googled food for lowering blood pressure. I advise you to leave this prescription drug alone. My blood pressure was up to 191 and with this medication it went down to 141 and leaving me unable to walk. The cramps and tinglings were horrible. Please don't take anymore, it can be done. The side effects are horrible with ampldipine and did not significantly lower the blood pressure. Did you read on this site the drug is banned in quite a few countries, obviously for a reason!

This keeps cropping up in this discussion group and I thought you might be interested in reading the following article posted by the Patient Admin Team on this subject a year ago:

"With regard to this particular topic the original postings about the drug being banned in Holland go back to 2006.

We have been in touch with the Pharmaceutical Society to find out what the current position is with amlodipine in Holland. They provided us with the following web address in Holland to have a look at http://www.cbg-meb.nl/CBG/en/_search/searchresult/default

This site gives the marketing authorization numbers for a number of amlodipine products which implies that it is still available over there.

We did track down that there was a distribution problem in Oct 2009 but are not sure how relevant that is.

So in our opinion it looks as though the drug is still available in Holland.

I took Amlodipine for a few months which caused difficulty walking around due to severe ankle swelling which led to a rash and inflammation on the bottom of my legs eventually diagnosed as varicose eczema.  I asked to be taken off the drug and whereas the ankle swelling disappeared completely after about 3 weeks, the varicose eczema remains!  I have since tried a few other supposedly BP lowering drugs but all with unwanted side effects so I guess I am particularly sensitive.  After stopping one of the latest drugs due to a repeat of the ankle swelling I immediately experienced a swollen, inflamed and painful toe.  Have now 5 weeks later seen a consultant who confirms it isn't gout or an infection (treated as such by the GP wth antiobiotics to no avail!) so is referring me for an ultrasound scan of my leg and abdominal arteries to rule out any blockages.  I am of the view that this is all caused by the side effects of both Amlodipine and a later BP drug, Diltiazem, not stopped soon enough to stop the damage.

So, although I'm not a medic, my advice from my experience would be that if anyone experiences very unwanted side effects that don't wear off after a couple of weeks or so of taking any drug, do go back to the GP and ask to be switched to another.  

2. Google search "amlidipine swollen ankles" Follow up and write down what you find. There are lots of web sites like this one.

3.Talk to your doctor. Show him any evidence you have dug up and tell him how your symptoms match it. Ask if he has read the leaflet that comes with the tablets. 

My doctor prescribed me amlodipine 5 or 6 yers ago. It gave me an irregular and missing heart beats coupled with very low blood pressure on waking. My GP at the time told me not to worry about it. And on one morning I think I nearly died of lack of oxygenated blood to the brain. I fainted and wasout for the count for five minutes. Only then did Iook at the leaflet with the tablets: symptoms similar to those in 5% of patients. I was sent to a heart specialist who told me amlodipine doens not cause arrhythmia. Clearly, the heart specialist had not read the leaflet either!  Make sure your doctor does.
