I'm a 21 Y.O female living with an anal fistula! All started when I was 19 out working, had an immense pressure in my bum cheek, Extremly red and painful, it burst before I got to the doctor and the smell was something I'd never smelt in my life! With a temp of 39.5, cellulitis, and apparently boardaline septecima I was packed off home with antibiotics!
After a referral to a consultant my surgeries began...
My first was treated as an abscess, was only a small wound and had to have packed, it healed too fast and 2 months later I was back in for another op! Was 11cm deep and 5cm wide, with daily visits from the district nurse to have my wound packed (as walking was too unbearable to get to my doctors) having a wound packed is a pain I can't even describe was on another level ! In the end my consultant decided to put a seton band in I had this in for 14 months... 14months of absolute hell, the pain was unreal, just walking round town was too much to bare! In the end I've gone for a second opinion, recent had a 'plug' procedure done, after ending up at my local a&e 2 days after I found out 6 weeks after at my follow up it was in fact the plug that had come out! Over 2 years on since all this started and I'm waiting for operation number 5! My question is how do you cope? It's taken over my life, I'm 21 and feel like my life's on hold, I'm not able to work and do what normal every day things! Any advice would be so greatly appreciated

Hello,
Although I've never dealt with a fistula, I have dealt with a fissure and hope these tips will find you well:
Here are some suggestions I have for you to help you through:
1. Try somee zinc oxide in the form of calmoseptine which has menthol to soothe the area down there as well. Calmoseptine can be bought at almost any local drugstore and can be bought online too.
2. Try squatting when going on the toilet instead of sitting. This is a much helathier position and the poop sometimes will just slide out, no pushing or straining involved.
3. I would definately take a fiber supplement, specifically metamucil is what I take evveryday, in ordr to allow your stools to be soft and to allow them to pass thorugh easily. THis being said, with any fiber supplemetn, you must drink lots of water when using them, or they will not work veffectively. Also, do not take too much as too much fiber can irritate your bowels on the way out and diarreah actually does worse down there.
4. I would recommend getting a sphicteronomy surgery if htings dont get better. I waited it out, gave up, had the surgery, and was able to heal within about two weeks. I had a chronic fissure, so I knew where you are ocming from with v all the pain and discomfort.
I wish you the best of luck,
Best,
Myles

Thankyou for your response! Will try all of these!!!! Anything to help the pain!
I'm having a seton band put in, to continue draining, then having an MRI and a surgery that's called ' a lift procedure',( not sure that's the same thing you've said about) my fistula is complicated and goes through both my muscles, my consultant wants to try all options (to basically save me suffering with incontinece so young)! Just seems never ending
All the best with your recovery
