Ankle injury - Not a constant pain, but it keeps coming back, any ideas what it is?

I hurt my ankle at a dancing competition squatting to the floor. The pain went away completely but came back the next day when I landed from a jump. The pain comes and goes, it will start hurting after a particular move and it hurts all around my ankle where I can only stand flat. Sometimes after 5 or 10 minutes of sitting down the pain will completely go away and I wont feel anything more from it for a few days, but then it will happen again and the same thing happens, after 10 minutes of rest it goes away. It seems any slight movement can trigger it, even sitting on the train to work, I will lift my foot and the pain will come. Sometimes the pain lasts longer, maximum it has been is 2 hours, and I can walk on it but only completely flat footed and its a bit of a dull ache. I have been off dancing for 6 weeks now and have rested it as suggested by my GP, but it still comes and goes. I'm not sure what it is and I don't want it to get worse and the pain to be more frequent. Any idea, help or advice would be much appreciated?

I suspect you have damaged a ligament in your ankle or foot.  It is quite common, and takes 4-6 weeks to heal perfectly.  That is with rest and physio.  I would also suggest an xray to rule out any fractures and then some physio (exercises and stretching).  Sometimes if an injury like this isn't healing on time, we suspect a possible stress fracture.

One exercise you can do while laying down is point your toes down then up.  This shouldn't hurt, if it does, stop.  Do this 10 times at night before bed and again 10 times in the morning.  It gets the blood circulating and will not hurt anything, even is there is a hairline fracture hiding there somewhere.  If it 's not better soon ask to see a specialist.

I have exactly the same thing, came on when I was sitting on a stool at my dads, agony for a day then just went, 2 days went and nothing, then I sat down to watch Telly one day and it went again. That was 3 weeks ago. Just got out of bed this morning and it's started again.  Can walk, but not very well and driving seems ok. Like you - I have no idea what this is.
