Hi I was prescribed Fluoxetine (40mg per day) for the last 2 years. Prior to taking the medication, aside from the usual depression symptoms I had horrible headaches almost daily. When I started the medication the headaches stopped and I rarely had a headache at all.
I have now stopped taking Fluoxetine. I haven't taken a tablet for nearly 3 weeks and I feel absolutely fine in myself but the headaches have returned. I don't feel depressed or down at all, I'm actually feeling positive and a lot better. I piled on weight, I was the heaviest I have ever been just before I stopped taking the tablets and when I stopped I lost 5lbs in the first week without any effort. I wasn't as hungry and I don't feel bloated as much as I did on the tablets. My skin was also really bad, I had red patchy skin on my cheeks but since stopping the tablets it has cleared up completely.
Other than the headaches I can't see any negative side effects of ditching Fluoxetine. I don't know if anyone else has had this problem but my headaches are very intense to the point where I feel sick and I just lie still hoping it will go away. Pain killers don't really make a difference. I would like to understand how Fluoxetine stops the headaches and if there is a suitable alternative? I don't wish to continue with Fluoxetine but I can't put up with the pain I experience on a daily basis.

Hi, I did suffer with anxiety & depression. I also suffered with headaches which my GP at the time advised to see an optician as he suspected eye strain caused my headaches. After seeing the optician I didn't need glasses and the headaches continued. I was then prescribed Fluoxetine for the anxiety and depression and the headaches stopped a few weeks into taking them regularly. For 2 years I rarely had a headache. Now I have decided to come off Fluoxetine and I feel great other than the headaches have returned, as bad as they were before I started Fluoxetine.
