Anxiety about my gallbladder!!!

Posted , 4 users are following.

So, cut a long story short, I was originally told I have kidney stones, despite having NO symptoms. All my symptoms leaned towards gallstones which I have previously had tests for! This was after three trips to A&E and sent home with no tests done and some buscopan - I don’t even have IBS. I had to go and ask my GP for a gallbladder ultrasound, which first they told me to go private then when I kicked up a fuss they finally agreed.

I have my scan in a few days, but now my anxiety is through the roof. What if I get an attack when I’m out? What if I’m alone and I hurt myself from passing out? What if they don’t even find anything on the scan?

To make things worse, my parents - well only one of them - is actually making me scared to go to them when I have an attack. Background, I’m 22 and still live at home. My mum took my prescribed tramadol off my in fear I would get addicted (I know it is addictive but come off it) and refuses me it when I’m in pain. This is just adding to the anxiety.

I have all the symptoms of gallstones, all checked off. What if nothing is found? I have actually lost a lot of trust for the NHS - well not all of them as they do an amazing job - mainly just my GP and nearest hospital.

Please can anyone help with how to lower anxiety with this?

The good thing is you are going for a scan and hopefully they will fine gallstones the scan is painless unless you are feeling tender then it might be a bit uncomfortable nothing to worry about .Lots of people have gallstones and survive. If you feel faint don't go out and if you are out sit or lie down chances are you will be fine at least you are getting a scan.Best wishes let us know how you get on..

Your gallbladder can still be functioning incorrectly without stones. Such conditions like biliary dyskinesia can cause that. Your gallbladder function can be seen with a HIDA scan, if no stones are shown on your ultrasound.

That’s reassuring to know. When they originally said kidney stones, then said there was no stones I just thought that they would just leave it and tell me to get on with it!! I will bring that up with my doctor when I go!

Hi Charlotte67804, you will find that GB issues can bring on anxiety simply because of the nature it effects other organs, like making you feel your having a heart attack when your not!  This is what can make you sweat and if its interfering with the ducts, sleepless nights may be involved which will cause more anxiety!

When they do the Ultrasound do not wear your best clothes as they swamp you with a runny gel, they should give you loads of tissue paper to soak it up and wipe away but it still gets on your clothes.

My Ultrasound the Stenographer showed me exactly how things work, I have sludge in my GB which hides small stones if they are forming.  Anyway I told her of my symptoms and she then told why sludge is worse than stones, she rolled me side to side so I can see how the sludge moves and she explained why at night things get worse.   It was a very interesting experience and put my mind to rest and she said that her report would make my Dr's job of getting me well again would be soon.

However, the Radiologist report (the person who reads the Stenographers report) made no emphasis upon what the Stenographer told me which meant my Dr's had nothing to give them an indication of what was wrong.  Upon which I was dismissed from the hospitals care and I had to be re submitted which is why I have got to wait until January 19 before I can ask for a HIDA test.

Trust me with regard to your Dr's, you have to remember they are Dr's and not specialists so it will all come down to their knowledge and is hit and miss whether you get a good diagnosis.

This is why they rely upon blood tests as the indicator to illness I believe.  A Ultrasound or CT scan will show things up much better so you heading the right way for a diagnosis anyway.biggrin

As for your parents, only you can deal with that I'm afraid.  Your diet will help you more than drugs will that's for sure and you will find there is little you will be able to eat to keep you out of pain.  So do not be surprised with weight loss as well.

From my experience with GB issues, it is torture upon the body.

I have had an ultrasound on my kidneys which was fine and showed no stones etc, so I know what to expect for the ultrasound. I think its just more of worrying that they wont find anything and I am stuck in this pain forever!

I am hoping my ultrasound will show something with my GB and I will be on the road to having a removal! I know I shouldn't wish surgery upon myself but that is the only way out I can see now! I am controlling my diet and eating the most blandest boring food ever so hoping that will be ok for now! smile

Try not to worry too much but do emphasize the fact that you are worried to your doctors and make sure your treatment is adequate. This applies to even letter writing to whoever it may concern.

Ultra sound confirms cholesterol type gall stones but I would think CT scan and especially with contrast(dye) confirms absolutely any calculi in any 'organ'....

Your doctors are or should be better equipped to allay your fears better than anyone else on the planet...... Although 'us lot on here' can put down what we have experience that does not confirm what is happening to all other patients.

The best advice I think is as above- make sure in your opinion the best care for you is being given to you. If you think for a second that you are not getting what is due then as said email or a letter galvanizes those who are caring for you into  'reply mode' and hopefully gets some action because as your post here suggests you would like help SAP.  I hope you get what you need and especially as you've got many many years in front of you yet to look forward to.

In addition to the above, have the kidney stones been resolved as to why they have formed?  I was told an infection can be the possible cause of stones forming in the urinary tract.  Mine were small and 'passed' but were numerous.

A specialist is needed to evaluate that and a good one to boot!

In regards to the kidney stones, thye never found any! I had ultrasounds and a CT and nothing was ever found, the only symptom I had was a UTI, which took about five weeks to clear on constant antibiotics!

I have been so persistent with my GP, they finally agreed to a scan last week, but they originally told me if I was so concerned to go private! I have my scan on Wednesday so I am hoping this will help with a diagnosis.

Thank you so much, I will make sure everything is noted and I speak to everyone I need to! smile
