Any ideas, knee injury 5 weeks down the line

Hi
Just to see if anyone has any thoughts. Playing football 5 weeks ago and with no one near me I went to push away and felt a rip in right knee and excruciating pain. Think I twisted. No broken bones per x ray. Ended up with bad swelling all around knee. Also went yellow and blue from knee all the way down shin. If I could post pictures I would. Eventually after 5 weeks I have much less pain. I can weight bear, but get bad pain when I bend and weight bear. Also a bit of creaking noise. Pain mostly on the inner side of knee. I'm hopeful now it's mending itself but is there the possibility I have been left with an underlying problem that could recur? I have specialist on Wednesday. Cheers, James. PS can post photos here?

Thanks. I'm just hoping it's not something requiring surgery.

Thanks Laura. I'm getting my hopes up that the pain is disappearing and it's healing itself. Just a horrible underlying feeling left the now. Feels dead weak and pain certain way I move it

Sounds like potential meniscus or ligament damage. Some require surgery, some limb rest (REAL rest, not just taking it a little easy). Definitive diagnosis will be an MRI which I would strongly encourage you do have done. If MD doesn't think that's necessary I think I would advocate for myself and request one. Best of luck to,you for good news and continue Jed recovery!

Thanks for that response. I am much better than what I was but something just doesn't feel right. Is there any way to post pictures on here? * thanks again, James

I don't really think that any external pictures of the leg or any of our qualifications are going to be able to help diagnose you ... whatever is going on is internal and MRI will be the diagnostic tool you need. See what your MD says. He/she may even have a suspicion once they manually manipulate your leg - this helps them detect a torn ligament (i.e. ACL, PCL, MCL) but would still do an MRI to visualize entire area and obtain extent of damage. I would encourage you to rest your leg well prior to your appointment, because an MRI won't be able to accurately capture the extent of damage if there is still a bunch of swelling in there. That is why they usually have patients stay off it, rest, elevate etc. prior to doing MRIs in order to bring the swelling down to make the test worth while. If you are 5 weeks out from the injury and the leg is adequately rested and swelling diminished this test will guide your MD. Hang in there.

Get an MRI, your seeing specialist, better late than never. I injured my knee 15 years ago and never went to doctor. You damage cartilage and don't fix it eventually you're bone on bone / had knees replaced two years ago. Get it fixed now and maybe you can avoid knee replacement.

Pics? Yeah...like this one. Get the knee checked out but...
If the x-ray shows nothing, the ortho will probably want an MRI which itself can be totally inconclusive. Then the doc will say that he "has to go in". That's when they find the real problem. Don't be surprised if this is the way it turns out...
