Me again,

Just wanted some feedback from some of you that have already partaking in THR as to which anesthesia method you had.

Questions, questions, questions.

Many people have a signal with or without sedation. I asked for and was given a general, unlike some I seem to recover from them quickly. I woke up in recovery at 11.30 was able to each lunch at 12.30

you will have a chat with the anaesthetist before the op, there may be medical reasons as to which they would prefer you to have

i will be thinking of you

    Hi Cookie!

I had THR in April and had epidural and sedation. I never heard or saw a thing after I said good bye to my family.

It seems like I had less of a problem with this form rather than the general.

    Good luck to you!

I had my THR in May and I had spinal with sedation and would have that again if necessary. One hour and a half and I was back in my own bed on the ward only spent 10 minutes in recovery. xx

Oh yes, I am 6 weeks post-op and I had the epidural with the twilight. It was wonderful!! No nausea afterwards and the epidural slowly wore off and they told me when I started to feel pain to get meds right away. I had great success with it.

My family has a history of getting very ill from anesthesia, so I opted for that route. Also they said that you recover faster from that kind of anesthesia and have less chance for blood clots.

Again, best wishes. Sending prayers and positive energy your way.

Hi Karen firstly let me thank you for your great reply smile but can you tell me what is twilight and I have a phobia with needles, do you still think this would be good for me?

      Hi,

Twilight is milder anesthetic. It's called conscious sedation. It's a smaller dose of general combined with medication for anxiety. Either way you're going to have to deal.with an I.V. General uses IV and gas. More side effects and higher chance of respiratory complications.

I was completely out, I don't remember anything no nausea, pain was controlled. Didn't feel groggy, etc. Seems like they are using this combination more often due to its high success rate and fewer complications. Oh, and the needle phobia, let them know. The epidural is done behind your back so you won't see it.

I'm not crazy about needles, either, but the only one you will see and feel, most likely, will be the I.V. and it will be fast.  Having had cancer, I was frequently stuck with needles (still am, for monitoring).  My trick is that I just shut my eyes when they do it and it's all over very quickly.  It may sound juvenile but it works for me.

I'm pulling for you and we'll be here waiting to hear from you when you're on the other side of this.

Having had general anesthesia on several occasions in the past, I really didn't want to go that route.  I was very nauseated the last time coming out of it (cancer surgery - unrelated to THR).  So I was happy when I was told they were going to do an epidural and sedation.  All I remember was them saying, "Okay, we're going to numb this area before we do the spinal..."  Then I woke up in recovery.  Having had both, I prefer an epidural to general anesthesia, but you will be fine whichever your anesthetist feels is best for you.

    Hello

i thought I was having epidural and sedation but was told my surgeon preferred a light general and light epidural . So I did and it was great . No sickness and on my feet a few hours later .

I had a spinal with sedation, I didn't feel anything and I had no problems in waking up. I was sick a couple of times in the next few days, I don't know why...but nothing serious, by the time I got home ( on the fourth day), I was fine.

The anesthesist will talk with you and explain everything, don't worry!
