Anyone had to keep a 2-week diary after hip injection?

Hi, if anyone had to do the above following a diagnostic hip injection, did you come off pain relief whilst recording your pain levels for those 2 weeks? I'm not sure if I should have taken off my morphine patches because all my pain has now come back but immediately following the injection there was no pain. I'm just asking if any of you took anything because surely that is defeating the object of the exercise? I'm in a right old mess. I should have asked....

No. Just had the local and Cortisone shot. First one lasted several months. Second lasted several days. I knew it was time for the replacement hip. So glad I had it done. My question is why are you even wearing Morphine patches after the injection. Sounds like you need a new hip

Well I have been in terrible pain since February/March. It got so unbearable my GP prescribed Morphine patches. My hip Xray itself didn't look that bad but I had a bone spur whatever that is and there was a lot less fluid around one joint than the other. I couldn't get in/out of a car without phyically lifting my leg nor could I turn over in bed. I had to grip the bedsheets between my teeth to stifle the crying out. God knows why my Xray didn't look too bad. So I've been wearing those patches for months now and they knew in the hospital.

      Hi Steve,

I saw your question to Sarah regarding Morphine patches after injections, I'm not sure what type of injury you have but mine seems a bit similar to Sarah's and the injection is supposed to give additional relief with the same everyday protocol of medicines.

Anyway, I don't want to sound preachy, just wanted to share what Sarah is dealing with as  I  have been dealing with this for over 10 yrs.

Have a great weekend however you're able to.

If you don't mind, would you share how much mgs in the morphine patches?  In all reality, if you've been on morphine for a few months and stopped, you'd go into withdrawals and you don't want to experience those.  I empathize with you when you said you had to grip the bedsheets to roll over...it's awful pain.

I hope you get some relief soon and please, if you're still unsure of taking the meds after the injections...call the Dr on call over the weekend.  However, while I'm not an expert by any means, I do have many  years I've been dealing with back, neck, leg, hip pain and I've always taken my scripts with the injections.

You take care and I hope you share how things are going with you.

      Warm Regards,

Hi.  I'm not sure what you mean by a diagnostic hip injection.  I had a cortisone injection with local anaesthetic and sedation in February 2017 and had no pain afterwards and it worked very well but only for a few weeks so I'm having a hip replacement shortly.

Hi, my hip injection procedure was called a flouroscopy and pictures were taken periodically to guage the problem. I didn't get sedation, I asked for it but they don't give it. Just a local. The worst bit was at the end when they poke around to try and get to the actual site of the worst pain. I now have to keep a diary for two weeks when I go back to discuss my pain lervels over the 14 days. I got immediate pain relief but it didn't last.

    Hi Sarah ,

i to had had a diagnostic hip injection , its aim was to establish if the pain was from the hip . And indeed you should have stayed on your pain medication , as the injection is to establish what the pain levels are even with morphine . The injection does not last long at all and some has no effect on some people. It's used to see if the pain goes at initial stage and how quickly it came back . For me it established it was my hip and not my back . As others will tell you , a hip X-ray that does not show how much pain you are in , does not mean it does not need replacing, it's about your quality of life .

I wish you you all the best

Thank you so much for telling me that. I din't know I should have kept on with the pain meds but at least I can say I was pain-free until I came off them (about 24 hours). I've  just had to replace the morphine patches - my pain level was terrible. At the moment the pain is all down the inside of thigh, in groin, bad pain in my knee too - and on the other side as well for some bizarre reason...well I just hope when I go back the surgeon will say I definitely need a THR. Then it's just a waiting game,

Again many thanks for all that info. I feel somewhat relieved

Glad you feeling a little better . I am now eight weeks post THR , as we had established that's where the pain was and not from my back . I am still on morphine , as the pain levels were very like what you are experiencing , hence it will take some time for pain to settle . It worried me at first , but just going with the flow . All the best to you and hope as you say , the consultant will list you for replacement .

      Hi Crisps ~

Good advice!  I've experienced all the above and then some.  I had my hip replacement Sept 22 and omgosh what a difference it made.  My  range of motion was pretty much pain-free with the exception I have horrible sciatica pain and I get injections to relieve it...it does help me.

If you haven't had your replacement yet, I was up and walking that same day and up 22 steps the next morning...so if you haven't had it, I wish you well!

      Warm regards,

Sorry you are having awful pain. Hip pain seems to spread everywhere and it's so debilitating. But you've had your THR now so when the pain lessens a lot you'll be onwards and upwards! I'm in no pain at all so far today. I'm not going to remove morph patches though. I've just had the results of my own lumbar MRI and it's no different to the one I had 2 years ago. So like you, the pain is definitely coming from my hip. Good luck in your progress. You'll get there smile

    Hi Sarah ~

When I had the hip injection, I did have to journal for two weeks.  I was told to go do what I've been doing to control pain, so I left my patches on and took the break-through meds.

Sarah, they want to see how long the injection works because if it's a short time, it's your hip if it last for 2 weeks or more, it's your spine.  Believe me, I had gone through the gamut of trials.  My injections only lasted a few days as well.

Don't stress over what you are troubled about because stress does make pain go up.  Anyway, I wish you luck and I hope you feel well soon

Hi, thank you for your reply. My recent MRI shows no worsening from the one I had 2 years ago so pain is definitely from my hip. You are really lucky to have had such brilliant results so quickly. Well done, so pleased for you smile

      Hi Sarah ~

The reason I did get results so quickly is because the Doctor I see for my pain control would also be the doctor that performs that test to document your pain...to see if it's hip or spine.  I've been seeing him since 2004 so he knows me well and moves quickly and bypasses me seeing my family doctor then referrals...I was really happy about that!

After the 2004, I was given the run around over and over!  I had the accident the 7 of Feb and by the end of May, I had one horrific surgery to repair the break in my spine...and fracture in the neck....I only wish I could use this doctor for all my needs.  He's an anesthetist and a pain control doctor, both were difficult to take...that's how  wise he is smile  I hope you get your results soon so you can move on in your life.  Huggss
