I was shaky, anxious and crying I don't like this feeling.

I feel ok this morning but I am dreading tonight. Also goin away to see family at weekend how can I act normal taking my tablet at dinner time. I don't want my family to know.I can't bear thinking I'm gonna get worse x

    Hi LittleNell,

Seems we're on the same schedule, both time-wise and dose-wise. For me the first day has been the worst. I take mine in the morning so I get the shaky, anxious sweats first thing at work.

I had a friend stay over on the weekend, so can kind of relate to the difficulty going to see family. And you're also like me in not telling anyone about it or wanting anyone to know - I totally understand that.

You know what though, I think the worst is our worrying about what will happen (hello anxiety). I got through a whole morning with my friend and her wee girl being over and it wasnt' the fun experience it should have been, but it wasn't so bad in retrospect. Maybe my friend thinks I wasn't so chirpy as I sat and tried to make conversation through the yawning and nausea, but I can live with that for now. And I did get through it without needing to take the propanolol I've been given for anxiety attacks. If you're taking your tablet at dinner time, then maybe the worst of it will hit (if it does) when you go to bed? Or maybe try taking it a wee bit later while you're on the visit, delay the onset until you're in bed?

I know Anne has suggested some breathing exercises, maybe that will help?

And you know what, we're both on the road onwards and upwards and yeah, it might get a bit sucky at times but this is the road to recovery and we can both look forward to being our old self again. And if it all gets too hard, well, there are loads of people here who are so supportive and understand just what you're going through.

Take care and be kind to yourself.

    Hi Carol and Littlenell,

You have nothing to be ashamed of in having these problems, would you hide it if you had a chest infection or a broken wrist no, you didn't do this to yourself, and I bet there's folk around you that's on cit that you don't know about, but you would definitely support them if you knew, well its the same for all of us, I am not ashamed and I have told everyone that will listen ha ha, I am 51 this month and have never experienced anxiety till August this year, after the death of my Mum and everything became too much, I am not ashamed I had to go on Cit as it shows I am trying to get better, so please don't feel u need to hide it. you are normal just having a bit of anxiety etc at the moment.

I am proud of you starting Cit and persevering, even with all the awful side effects as well as everything else you are trying so hard, u deserve to get there will all the support you can get.

Stay strong and you will get there and the deep belly breathing will help you too, just give it a go.

    Take care

    Dear All,

My husband on Cit for 3 days and feels anxious. I'm trying to understand his feelings...

I'm also on antidepressant Mirtazapine and had side effects for 2 month.

We have two kids and I'm afraid that they might feel some uncomfortable staying with us.

It is really hard time for our family.

We can not support each other.

    Thanks for all of you.

    Hi Elena,

It is so tough the first few weeks but do persevere as the rewards are great, I feel back to normal now and wouldn't wish this on anyone, but the first 4 weeks were hard while my body adjusted to the Cit, then I woke up feeling back to my old self one morning and have got better each day after that. please join us on the forum 'Anyone NOT had any side effects on Citalopram? as a lot more support there, all people that re going thru the different stages of taking Cit and other meds, its been a life line for me, knowing I am not alone in this.

The kids will be grand, just remember its not their fault and cuddle them extra, it will help everyone, and in about 4 weeks all will be returning to normal, I for one am so happy Cit exists, even tho I would not take it at first as too anxious and scared, but I wasted 2 months trying to heal myself which did not work, so take care and there is light at the end of the tunnell.

      Such lovely words Anne! ❤️

Today is my first day on Cit, felt very reassuring reading your words! ❤️

    Dear Anne,

Thank you for your reply. It is not countable, how important your words for us, because I do not have close friends or relatives to share with them all our problems...

The major issuer is - my husband can't believe that he might stay on Cit for the rest of his life. Doctor says that minimum period is 6 month and that will be only my husband's decision to stay on or off.

He things that Cit is a kind of drug and he doesn't want to be addictive to it. But we have some people, who stays on other antidepressants for years.

Some specialists advise us "do not thing about this at all", just take it as necessary, like antibiotics or insulin for diabetics.

When I started my Mirtazapine, I was hoping to stop taking it after 6 month, but now I feel that I'm not ready to come off. Probably, this is a mentality - " I can win this depression by myself, with no tablets!!!" - especial for men.

This is what happened with my husband, he did not want to start taking any medicine at all, and now he feels like a looser...

Sorry for my poor English, and Thank you for understanding.

I will join you on Anyone NOT had any side effects on Citalopram with hope on support.

    Hi Elena,

You are very welcome, you husband needs to understand that this is just an illness the same as chest infections flu, broken arms we need treatment to help get better, I have never taken anything before for Anxiety but last August I was badly affected and was so down, I have never experience this before and thought I could get over it myself, and wouldn't take the Cit, as thought thats not me !!! so I tried to do it myself and failed miserable just got worse and worse crying all the time, so in the end I thought I have nothing to lose, so started taking Cit, then 4 weeks later I was back to my old self, I couldnt have done that alone, and I am not ashamed to have taken Cit to get there and if I have to take it all my life to be myself and not like I was then I welcome it. I take tablets for Underactive thyroid s well for all my life and taking Cit will be the same, just something I need to give me a life worth living.

So dont feel ashamed its just a necessity to be bck to normal, and depending on how he feels maybe it wont be long term.

Take care and see you on Anyone NOT had any side effects on Citalopram

      Hi Sarah,

Firstly well done on taking the massive step to gaining control over your anxiety.  Keep looking forward.  Taking these meds is not an easy decision. Your journey has started.

Use the people on here to support you as the first few weeks can be tough.  For many, me included, it gets worse before it gets better as these tablets sort out the brain chemistry and your body learns to accept them.  Week 2 was my worst. I thought I was going crazy, really!

Your husband needs to be aware of the side effects, and your huge commitment to getting better so he can help you. This forum may help him to understand that the tablets may make you worse as you adjust but there is definitely a light at the end. I hope he can step up. If not then vent, scream, cry or whatever here.

Having a partner with anxiety is hard. My long term relationship just ended as I took so long to actually get help. Thought I could manage med free. I can't. Sadly he didn't stay to see the change...his loss. The fact I can say that after the pain I've suffered recently starting these and his leaving is real progress!

Only you know how to best manage these and your relationship. People are here for you.  You are not alone. Sending hugs xx

Thank you Donna for the reply. Hate the fact that after 2 days on these tablets I can't sleep. My anxiety is worse because of the tiredness. I just feel so sorry for my husband the now. He has told me he can't cope and is only with me for our daughter. When will I start to feel better with this citilopram or should I just stop them and fight this anxiety? Xx

Hi Sarah, for me it took a month. I had a great day today like my old self!  I know patience is very hard when you anxiety but one month for a better life balance, is nothing.  Think that way.  Your daughter needs you well. Your husband will see a change in you, which will perhaps bring him back to you.  Again talk to him about the commitment you are making to get better.  I believe anxiety comes from a brain chemistry issue, so fighting it without medication will be hard.  I used to run to help. Ended up running a marathon, but I can't keep running forever. I am week 4 and things are improving ...stick at it,  but talk to your husband so he understands. It is a family journey to a better destination xx

Hi donna7007, I just recently stated taking 10mg of the cti, and just joined today. So reading all these comments are going to be so helpful. Besides feeling sick is anyone else experiencing body aches, and when do you take your medicine morning or at night? cookie6694

      Hi Cookie

I started 10mg citalopram and had 4 doses now, I take it as advised about 9pm . Couldn't sleep first night but last 2 nights been better. Worst thing ever for me is the nausea. It lasted all day yesterday and I wake up with it in a morning. There again due to anxiety I had it anyway. I'm hoping it will just disappear cause I can't do anything. Has anyone got any tips on dealing with it. Gonna have to skip work again
