Anyone on here had a revision?

Hi,

Just after info as I am due to have my THR which was done 13 years ago taken out and a new hip put in as its worn away. There is lots  of help available on this site its great, you people on here are so helpful, but nothing (or I havent come across any!) on having it done a second time! I have lots of questions - like is the recovery longer etc. I know the risks are much higher (clots, etc) would love to hear from the horses mouth as they say!

Would be great to speak to someone who has been through this.

Thanks

Tracy

I have had revision, but not 'standard' replacement of worn out parts.

Mine was 10 weeks after initial surgery for a misplaced part - and it failed.

Recovery time just the same as my original surgery, but different.  I was able to sleep on operated side first time, but only on unoperated side second time.  Also had urine retention second time, and being less fit, had less stamina to walk when recovering.

So, the same, only different. eek

      Thanks Graham,

Just really wanting the low down on it all, like I say there is no information out there - very little. I know its a much longer operation, I know the risks are greater - but I would like to know more in detail.

      Thanks again Graham.

I guess it depends on what they have to remove - the newer parts are modular, so with mine, the stem and head are separate, so a new head could be slipped onto the tapered end of the stem without removing the stem from my femur.  Similarly, my acetabular socket could (if it wasn't stuck) be removed from the metal shell in my pelvis.

The risks, as I understand it, are in getting the old parts out without damaging the bone, which must be quite hard to do as they are put in so securely.

Yes, thats what I understood too, taking it out without damaging the bone! My surgeon has already told me they need specialist equipment to do the operation, hence its being done at Lancaster not kendal (they don't have the equipment at Kendal). All hips are done at kendal but if you need a revision it has to be done at Lancaster. Anyway I'm seeing him again in a few weeks, think I will write down all I need to ask him!

      thanks Graham.
