arthritis in non operated hip

Hi. Wanted to ask some advise from those of you that have had both hips done. I was told approx 2 years ago that I had osteoarthritis in both hips, but right one was worse than left. Am now just over 5 weeks post right thr. I am walking indoors with no sticks but finding it hard to drop down to one stick outside as I get pain in the muscles in the left leg. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it likely to improve am I stuck with it until I eventually have the other hip done?

Hi Shirley, I had my right hip done in January and like you have arthritis in left hip as well. At my 6 week check up with surgeon, he was looking at my pre op X-rays and asked how my left hip was, as on the xrays the left looked as bad as the right although I get no pain from left hip. I'm in no doubt that in time I will have to have the left hip done as well but will wait until it gets as bad the right did.

    Good luck

    Hi Shirley

I haven't had both hips done, just the right one but do have osteoarthritis in both.

Maybe it's too early to diagnose any aches and pains as muscles and joints all over our bodies must be re adjusting? So likely to be hurting where we use muscles that have been in hibernation since pre op.

My left leg is definitely in sympathy with my right and while have managed one stick outdoors, my left makes the most fuss later. Today when I go out I will go back to two.

I've also had painful tingling in my left thigh, woke up yelling last night but it eased off after a few moments

Sounds like you are doing really well and hopefully someone on this excellent site will give you some guidance

Hoping you may be right Barbara and things will settle a bit. Think I overdid things yesterday - did walk outside for a bit with no sticks, and then one for a bit before using both again ( I walk around the park each day - just under a mile). Also had a day when I decided I wanted to start getting back to 'normal'. Took booster cushion out of chair, removed raised toilet seat (still have bars) and moved back from spare bed to lower double. (Am still being careful of 90 degree rule though ). Have taken 2 lots of ibuprofen today and leg has settled down ( haven' t been taking any painkiller). Know I will need the other hip done eventually but hoping to get a year or so before I need to - fingers crossed eh?

Hi Shirley! I am 5 weeks post op tomorrow! But maybe you might like me have arthritis in both hips! I have had my right hip done! Still walking with a crutch! I am a full time carer for my hubby! He also has on going osteo arthritis but has chosen the painkiller route! Non of them work!I fear I might have to have my right knee done as it clicks each time I walk!! Good luck regards Amanda

    Hi Shirley.

I had my left hip replaced in Feb2014 and was told the other hip would need replacing.

I managed around 6months with moderate pain from it,but eventually had to bite the bullet and am now 9 wks post op on the right hip.

Slowly getting back to fitness, but now my left hip is beginning to ache a bit.

Hopefully this is just a result of it having to take the strain,we shall see.

If I were you I'd give it 6 months to get aver the first op and then get it done.

    Shirley,

Happy Easter to you and your family.  Unfortunately, you will.  I am 12 weeks post op TRHR and was told at the first X-ray that i also needed the left one done.  I was not happy about that, but accepted it.  Surgeon told me to wait until i felt necessary to get done (i am only 43).  Well, now that my right hip feels fantastic, my left hip and thigh and sometimes knee act up big time!!!  I think it always did, but the right leg/hip was so bad that it outshined the left one.  so, i am planning to get the left one done same time next year unless i get really bad.  im taking ibuphrophin to help with it, drink plenty of water and ice certain areas of it if it hurts.  i try not to over-do the exercise on that leg so it dosnt hurt.  strange, i dont even have to ice my replaced hip now, but i do the other one. i have to just take it all in stride and believe that in less than one year, i will be pain free on both sides.  good luck to you!  Ginny USA NJ
