Bad luck comes in 1...2....?

You all seem to be my virtual friends so I thought I share some stuff with you. Cataract has indirectly another victim.

I went to eye doc to get my eyes fully tested as my wife forced me to. This was my first ever full test.

Good news-

No cataract, glucoma etc eye pressure is in lower half of normal range, far vision 160% maybe better as she ran out of smaller letters.

Neutral news-

As suspected I have dry eyes and rough cornea. Nothing major but I have been given some sticky Bauch + Lomb gel with vitamin A.

Freaked me out when I first tried it due to resulting bluriness. Got small glimpse of what you guys are going through 😦

Bad news-

I have been diagnosed with

"central serous retinopathy" in my left eye!!!!

I have small fluid built up behind my retina, right next to the macula 😦

The fluid is lifting my retina layer up, no breakage/leakage currently.

In 2 months I have to go back and the eye doc thinks it would most likely be gone. If not and if it shifts, breaks or becomes larger then I am screwed 😦

Doc says the cause is stress, cortisol released by my body.

Last 6 weeks as you know I have

been super stressed due to my wife's cataract and I took it to my heart as she is my world.

We both had come to terms with the cataract issue but now got hit by this.

Somehow I have to relax in middle of all this to produce less cortisol!

Ok I stop for now. In my next post I will list things I am trying to do to relax. Might help others too.

P. S- Those who PMed me, I will reply soon.

    Hi

Sorry to hear that, I understand how you must feel, even that I have not had that condition, at least I think I have not.

But I know how hard it is not to stress, when you in a situation that are stressing, I have been there and seen it many times, I have worked 18 years in a Danish State prison, and PTSD are more common there than the flu.

What have worked for me personally for years, have been to work with myself through meditation.

But not many men take this road, I regularly meet up with others and do group meditation, and we are only very few men in that group πŸ˜ƒ

I wish you and your wife all the best, I am sure you are in good hands regarding your eye condition, when the eye doctor are giving you 2 month to recover on your own and you still have perfect vision, it shows that you are still in relative good shape, otherwise the eye doctor would have taken action in a hole different way, I am very sure of this. But he have to scare you a little bit, so you take it seriously, and change what is causing it.

I am also sure your wife will make the right decision when it comes to dealing with her cataracts, I know all this is easy for me to say, but really, I am sure you both will come out of all this in good shape.

    Cheers

    Christian

Thanks Christian for your lovely post.

In my wife's Pilates and Yoga classes of 30 people I am lot of the times the only male. So I am open to meditation too πŸ˜ƒ

Very sorry you have this to deal with as well as your wife's cataracts without much support from those close to you.

Very hard to tell yourself to not stress out when you are in the midst of a crisis. You may want to take a mini holiday with your wife just to change your routine and give yourselves a break from dealing with all the vision issues.

I read CSR usually goes away in one or two months on its own without treatment and praying that will be the case for you.

Perhaps from here on in focus on the positive outcomes of cataract surgery. I read 90% of the things we worry about never happen. We live in a time where there has been huge advancements with cataract surgery and stats are on your wife's side she'll have a successful outcome no matter which IOL she chooses.

    Wishing you both well.

Some things I will try/expand on to relax! Keep in mind, I am a very rational person unfortunately/fortunately and don't believe in God or religion, so praying type of stuff is no go for me and won't work πŸ˜ƒ

Also I am very sporty and fit with a good diet so scope for improvement is bit limited there!

    1. Yoga- I have been doing Yoga for 10+ years but more the exercise physical side rather than the mental side! I am going to expand on the meditation and breathing side more to look inwards.

    2. Sleep bit longer and go bed early. I have started playing white sounds in the background now, when I go to bed.

    3. Drink lot of green tea. Not a big coffee guy but have cut it out 100%.

    4. I have started playing relaxing music 24/7. I am in a creative field and work alone so can have music playing. Some examples-

      a) Buddhist/Hindu meditation music and some relaxing old chants.

      b) Hours of rain drops falling on leaves (white sound). Reminds me of my childhood.

      c) River flowing type of water sounds (white sound). I find it very relaxing.

    5. Sit in my balcony in total silence and meditate.

    6. Exercise- Can't do much there as I exercise a LOT (have all my life).

    7. Diet- Have been following plant based whole food diet for 20 years so can't improve much there. Maybe increase dark leafy greens even more and cut out any junk food.

    8. Walk in the woods more.

If you have any more ideas then do let me know!

This may seem like an odd thing to add but I have found essential oils to be of help. I use them topically as well but diffuse them at night. Many help with anxiety and with sleep. IE use lavender on its own or blend with peppermint and eucalyptus essential oils. Sometimes add even drop of lemon essential oil. Cedarwood essential oil is another good one to diffuse to help with sleep.

As mentioned I suffer from atopic eczema (twice had to go on antibiotics as my hand got infected. One winter wore s cotton glove all winter as it was so bad (called it my Michael Jackson look). Honestly never thought my hand would look normal again and the steriod creams never seemed to help at all. Was getting flare ups on flare ups. A friend suggesting the essential oils and I pushed it aside however I got desperate and started to try them. Took a few months but my hand is completely healed and normal. I still get the odd flare up but I am on it right away and haven't been in that terrible condition now for a year.

You and your wife have been through a stressful time, but hopefully, as you said, you have come to terms with the cataract discovery and feel a little less stressed.

Have you tried "Restorative Yoga". Since your wife is a yoga instructor, you likely know about the different types. Restorative involves lying around with bolsters and props in different positions to help you relax. It's not typically offered by most yoga studios, as most people are looking for a more active class and don't want to pay to just "lie around" for an entire class. But it is great for relaxation, and a good offset if you are already very active.

Sleep is very important. I personally use ear plugs instead of white noise. Also make sure your bedroom is dark. Try to get 7.5 hours of sleep.

      It is a good idea.

Btw I used to have that clay pot thing with candle underneath and you place few scented drops above it. Might use it again during meditation.

My wife gives Power Yoga so more strength and movement based.

Might do the relaxing type at home privately with her.

It is amazing how essential oils and scents can affect mood and sleep. My daughter uses now various ones to enhance memory while studying and for anxiety and sleep. Better than medications.

Just a follow up. Green tea has caffeine too so I will cut it out! Just thought I update in case someone takes my wrong advice lol

Well, my first reply may not be posted because I recommended a free relaxation app that I love called Relax +Anyway, WorriedHusband, it certainly sounds like you are doing all the right things to reduce your stress. Maybe add in a warm bath soak with epson salts?
