Blast from the past

Hello Hipsters, just popped in and was amazed to see some familiar avatars and loads of new hippies. This forum was a massive support to me through two THR's.

Number 1 is 15 months old and number 2 is 7 months - hard to believe 18 months ago I could barely walk. My life has changed considerably, some of it for better, some worse, but just wanted to encourage anyone in those dark, early days, that it does get better.

It has been a fight to get my health back. I don't think I realised the changes I would undergo afterwards or the struggle I would have to get my new hips feeling like I owned them.

I am still stiff in the mornings and get tired when I have done too much but life is good. I am building a new venture after leaving a previous life of working with young children.

The one thing I would recommend is Pilates. I found an amazing teacher who specialises in people recovering from ops. I have discovered that the cut muscles and nerves led to some fairly peculiar side effects in my body with other muscles taking over the role of the injured ones. Pilates has gently built up my weedy glutes and has started protecting the back muscles that I need to support my poor old arthritic spine.

When I started I could barely life my leg up but Pilates has built up my strength and I can now walk for miles and have ditched all pain relief.

I also swim (although my first attempts nearly led to drowning as I didn't realise that my surgeon had put stones in my legs!!!) which is also building my strength.

Don't give up, keep going, be positive and find something that sets a goal each week for improvement, even if it is only walking to the end of the road and back.

I have finally learned that my new hips are not like my old ones and don't function in the same way but with hard work and determination you can get back to life again.

Good luck everyone!

You seem to tell it like it really is.  And I needed to hear that.  Three weeks to my surgery and counting.  Take care.

    Hi Kate

i agree with you. I have been doing Pilates every week for 9 years with a Physio Pilates teacher. I am hooked! It has got me through 2 hip replacements. I have just had my 4 week post op appointment today with  physio and could balance on the wobble board with no problem. So core control is still intact. I would say anyone who hasn't done it, male or female, to give it a go. Glad to hear you are doing ok.

    Hi Kate,

I joined just as you were leaving. Some of your posts were epic and continue to be reposted with affection and good humour - thank you from all of us who have been reassured (esp by the sleep club).

Many other posts have been great but I truly believe that only Dot and Sarah are in your league for combining humour and superb commonsense advice.

I get my 2nd hip in 2 weeks so it is especially good to see your promising yet down to earth update.

Many thanks and best wishes for a full recovery and good 'after' life!

    Regards,

    L

So lovely to hear from you!! I haven't been on for months (I enjoyed all the picnics and beach days with my girls that I couldn't do last summer!) so I have also been out of the loop - and was so pleased and happy to see your lovely post and know you are well smile

I have often thought of you, as you were always a little ray of sunshine on here, and had hoped it was all good and had worked out well, I wondered whether you back with your chickens in the sunshine... I am so very happy that are so well recovered.

I can't agree more about the recovery and the new normal we find ourselves in, but as you so rightly pointed out there are many ways to improve things.

Big hugs and say hello to the chickens for me!
