Hi there,
Hoping someone can help as I'm getting myself into a bit of a state. I came off contraception (the nuvaring) mid-July due to the end of a long term relationship. By early October, my period still hadn't returned so I went to the GP. He did some blood tests and the results showed all my hormone levels to be normal, with the exception of LH which was 'raised in isolation' - suggestion ovulation. As if expected, I think had a very light period about 10 days later. However, and here's the interesting thing, I wouldn't have noticed that period had it not started during sex with a new partner. That happened (totally ruined the moment), so I wore tampons for a few days and each time I changed them there was a very small amount of brownish blood. 5 days later, we had sex again and everything was normal.
Annoyingly, about a week later we were having sex and the condom broke, meaning I needed to take the morning after pill. One week after this (this weekend just gone), we were having sex again and I start bleeding again. There was enough to make a mess. Again, I've been wearing a tampon ever since but the flow is so light it's almost needless.
I went to the doctors on Monday and explained the situation, plus the fact that I've had quite bad stomach cramps for the past week, She did an exam but said there was too much blood to tell whether it was due to a period or somewhere it isn't supposed to. She told me to go back when I'm not bleeding (not sure how I'll know when that is given there's not enough to warrant the use sanitary products), and that if things don't settle down by January she'll send me for a pelvic scan.
I'm really scared something's seriously wrong, plus it's putting a real downer on a new relationship. Everything was normal last time I had a smear, and my next one isn't due until February next year. I've obviously been googling and am worried about the C word, and everything that could mean for fertility.
Does anyone have any thoughts on what this could be? Has anyone had anything similar? Any insight or advice much appreciated.
Thanks,
Cara

This mostlikely isn't anything to worry about. Periods can be very odd following the cessation of hormonal contraception. Stomach cramps also fits with it being periods.
How old are you? Were you vaccinated against HPV?
I hope this sorts itself out. If you do continue to have post-coital bleeding however - definitely go back and see your doctor.

Thanks for the quick (and reassuring) response! (Also sorry for all the spelling/grammar mistakes in the post above - can't work out how to edit it?)
I'm 31, so unfortunately wasn't vaccinated. Also as a side, I had an STI test very recently and everything was negative (but I don't think they tested for HPV).
If it was post-coital bleeding I wouldn't be so worried, but the fact that it's during is pretty distressing. Can't find as much about this anywhere!
