I'm a 75 year old male in good health. For the last couple of years I've been wrestling with frequent need to get up at night to pee. I've had a couple of cystoscopies and tried a couple of drugs.
The problem became serious for me after a bout of food poisoning, leaving me with periodic diarrhea and constipation. Whenever I have either one I start having difficult commencing urination and continuing it until my bladder is empty. It may take me 15 minutes in the bathroom at night before I've peed enough to go back to bed. But because my bladder isn't really empty I'll likely be up again in an hour or 90 minutes.
My urologist thinks that when I have bowel problems, the increased pressure in my abdomen pushes my prostate into the urethra, partially blocking it.
I have a 118ml bladder, 36g prostate, no middle lobe. small side lobes. When I don't have the blockage I have a residual of either 8.5% or 30% depending on which ultrasound test score is used.
It would seem like there must be some easy way to push my prostate back into position away from my urethra.
Has anyone had a similar problem? Found anything that helps?
Thanks John

You can try Kegels or some Yogic contractions called bandhas. You can also try muscle relaxant drugs. That said, sounds like classical bph/luts and you therefore probably will end up needing some sort of prostate reduction surgery or prostate freeing procedure like Urolift. The alternative is self cathing which is a path some here, including myself have chosen. No drugs, no surgeries, no complications. Just instant relief and complete emptying on a schedule you set. We have several threads on self cathing on this site, or feel free to PM me for more info.

Have you seen a gastro to deal with your bowel issues?

Jim, with a 118ml bladder and 36g prostate, my uro feels like we can solve my problems without surgical reduction procedures. He's got me on a couple of meds that may be helping.
Clonazepam helped alot for awhile then lost its effectiveness.
I'm squeamish about self cathing but more and more guys are finding it to be the best solution so I may wind up trying it.

John, let's hear what your IBS diet is like. Maybe we can figure out something. Hank

Cutting out tea and coffee (whether decaf or not) has helped me. I still don't void completely, but it's a big improvement. I get up to pee at night twice instead of 5 times on average.

John,
Not a "yoga master", but you could try some of the bandhas on your own, or seek instruction, specifically Mula Bandha and Uddiyana bandha. Personally, I've been experimenting with something akin to Uddiyana bandha to get things moving by perhaps moving the insides around a little. As to self cathing, it's normal to be squeamish in the beginning. I certainly was. All I can say is that all that disappears within a few weeks and then it can become as routine and stressful as brushing your teeth.

".. my 118ml is when my bladder is full. "
Hi John, just curious, how did you measure your bladder to find out that 118ml is when it is full ? Did you have an ultrasound ? Or did you cath ?
If you peed 118ml, your total bladder volume maybe more than that, if you are retaining urine. Hank

HI John,
LIke Hank, I'm a also a little unclear what the 118ml represents. Did you get this number from some test result or is it the amount you void into the toilet when your bladder feels full? If the latter, then what you really want to know is what is left over in the bladder after you void 118ml. That is called your post void residual or PVR.
