What kind of scan was it?  was it a DXA scan, which measures density?

If you had a scan where you were required to drink a radioactive liquid then wait til it travelled round your body, the liquid will collect where bone is breaking down for whatever reason.  These areas are called 'hot spots' and will appear as darker than other areas of bone.  Other types of scan will also show degradation of bone usually as darker - the less dense the bone, the darker the area on the scan.
