broken bone in foot

Posted , 4 users are following.

Broken 5th metatarsal. X rayed after three days. Pretty bad break. I was given a boot , no crutches. Returned to doctor after 4 weeks, he squeezed the foot and I had no pain in the area.No further x-ray. But ankle was a bit swollen, he said it was probably the boot so try to wean myself from wearing it this week ( week 5). I go back to see him in 4 weeks although he said if I feel everything is good I can cancel the appointment, I was a bit shocked at that. No mention of physio etc. I have walked indoors without it for a day and my ankle is so swollen. I am concerned the ankle has a small break. On leaving he said Going mad but realise it could be a lot worse. Anyone else have ankle problems, feel like going back to A&E.Any help would be good.

Said another way you did "go over" (or "twist") your ankle.

This form of injury - at times - combines a break in the fifth metatarsal with an ankle injury (which might be to bone or soft tissue)

Oh boy do I know it, went to A&E a few hours after I fell twisting my foot as I was getting off a step, was diagnosed with a fractured fibula, given a temporary cast and sent home. Next day in fracture clinic consultant examined me prior to having a cast put on, then apologised said he wanted me to have further x-rays sure enough I'd a fracture through the base of the 5th metatarsal. A week later a further x-ray showed that break had too large a gap to heal on it's own, so had an ORIF a week later. Came out of the NWB cast earlier this week, six weeks post op eight weeks post accident, am now in an air cast with gradual weight bearing and go back in four weeks.

So yes I'm one of those that did both, so thankful that the consultant picked up on it.

That would be fine, except I do not want to broach the rules of this web-site with information which could be construed as advertising or self promotion. I think the rules are good and should be followed. Others have written "private" letters to me via patient.info
