I'm a 21 year old male. On two different occasions, one just a few minutes ago and the other several days ago, I was pacing back and forth at home and I had my hands wrapped around the back of my neck with my thumbs pressed sort of against both side of my neck right above the clavicle. Within a few minutes I got nervous and my heart started racing. It slowed down after about a minute and was pounding kind of hard before going back to normal. Could compression to the blood vessels in my neck have caused this? Is there a possible underlying issue?

If you're an anxious person then my guess is you had a panic attack. it's easy to think something is very wrong when you struggle with anxiety, I know! You catastrophize everything. i highly doubt it was the pressure on your neck. I think it's just a flare up of anxiety. wishing u the best:)

from my understanding is that compression of both major arteries to the brain (the carotids) can cause people to pass out or possibly cause damage, so i guess refrain from doing it. thats my take on it, you could look into it further. i also think that what you did can be a form of carotid message which is used to slow the heart rate down so as a compensation your heart increased its beats to make sure you stay okay. i may be wrong so have a look ar it if you are interested. someone below mentioned panic attack which ofcs could also be it. stay safe and take care .
