Can IBS really do this to me...or is it health anxiety taking over

Hi all

Is any one else experiencing a number of different complaints with IBS,

I have always had a dodgy stomach and been really loose when I go to the toilet,

After years of doctor visits I was told I have ibs.

I have now over last 12 months started getting pains every where, started with lower back pain, which now is giving me pains and discomfort in top of right leg and groin area. I have had ultrasound on stomach, number of doctor visits, urine samples, blood tests and no answers.

The weird uncomfortable feelings I get around back, side, groin and upper legs are not that painful that it stops me doing anything, Being a male 29 and a builder I have always been active, so don't want to let this stop me.

Is this something any one else experiences with ibs or health anxiety.

Any feedback will be welcomed

Thanks in advance

Take care

I have my own side effects which include severe abdominal cramps, cold sweats, fatigue, sickness and attacks which have me running to the loo and staying there. All my pain is around my stomach and bottom for obvious reasons but it does not spread any further unless the illness brings on a migraine.

I have been told that people with IBS are genuinely more sensitive to pain, so it may be that your relatively mild pain are an indirect consequence of your IBS, and something that wouldn't trouble non-IBS sufferers.

      Hi Jan,

That makes sense, thanks hope that is the case, I need to find a medication that controlls it all now,

      Cheers

Yes I get them too. Anxiety ABSOLUTElY plays into it. The more you worry the more tension you hold etc in your body. Then you notice every twinge every pain every niggle. That's my theory anyway..

      Hi ellacraig

Thank you, always good to hear that others get same pains. ( not that I'm happy your in pain) just peace of mind it's a common thing with ibs sufferers 😅

My IBS has had me doubled up in pain on 2 occasions today, each for about 45 minutes. I've been getting sharp twisting pains around the lower left quadrant, and it makes me feel a lot of nausea, and I get slightly faint and dizzy with it also.

My GP once told me that the bowel / colon has a very complex nerve system that doctors don't fully understand still, and the bowel symptoms experienced with IBS can give pain anywhere around the body. I'm especially prone to getting mainly sharp chest, shoulder and back pains, but have had pain or tingling in legs and groin, as well as other problems.

Hoping my appointment with Dietician soon will help to get me to a point where I can attempt to get back to work. Lost my job because of this, and quality of life has got so much worse, have to say I hate IBS.

Take care and all the best for the future!

Paul thanks for the reply, I also get sharp pains in chest now and again.

I got to agree it's really unpleasant when it throws pains here there and every where.

I am going to attempt the fodmop diet and be strict with it see if that helps, are there any things you find trigger it more than others?

I'm sure health anxiety plays a massive part in all the pains, concentrating on the pains just seems to snowball many other problems, then find more aches around the body.

Thanks for taking time to reply

      All the best

Eggs, pork, white bread, onions, pasta, they are the triggers that bring on the worst reaction, although I can eat back bacon but not chops or a roast joint. There are plenty of other foods I struggle with, but they don't give as much of a problem, but I can hardly eat fruit and a lot of vegetables, I think I lack a lot of vitamins and minerals in my diet, and I certainly feel it, never been so tired and lathargic.

I do suffer anxiety anyway, even before these problems started happening, and as someone else has said, anxiety can lead to a heightened sense of pain, which certainly seems to be true, especially with my pains today. Odd though, I feel ok now, definitely the worst part of IBS is the randomness of flare ups of symptoms, the pains not much fun either.

Good luck with fodmap, I'll be starting it in a couple of weeks! Onward and upward (I hope)!!!

Good luck with the FODMAP Diet.   I have been told by my doctor that its best to have a dietician to help with it to make sure you understand it and help you keep to it strictly.  I have tried two dieticians and neither understood much about FODMAP.   I am about to try a third who claims to be experienced in the diet.

These pains are common with IBS and worsen with anxiety.  I get stomach pain and constipation.  If I have a flare up I get nausea, back pain, agonising stomach cramps and sometimes loose stools.  I have also had pain at the stop of my legs.

    Hi

Food plays a massive roll in IBS as well as being nervous, anxious or even stessed.

All the pains you experience are all normal.

If I am outside I get anxious because I'm not near a toilet or I'm waiting on a bus, then the pains start. I try to shift my mind, like studying the trees until the bus comes. It does work.

You just have to find something else to concentrate on and it will help in a lot off occasions. Do look into what you are eating though.

    Good luck.

      Hi Carrie

Thanks for reply, my pains are pretty constant not just when I get stressed I can't put mind else where and pains disappear, is that how yours work.

I need to try and control the foods I eat, and the beer I drink I suppose, I know my health anxiety gets the better of me and throws all sorts of pains and tingle feelings all over body.

What food you find disturb you?

Do you get tingles in waist line and down tops of legs?

Sorry for all the questions it's just good to hear others story's

      Matt
